Staying over in manchester

Hello all, I'm looking to stay over in manchester from Thursday 21st January to 1st of February, I've not booked a place yet but wondering of anyone can give me advice on the best places to stay? And potentially arrange to meet and hang out with others like minded relaxed just have a social.
