Gunnison Beach
Keep an eye on www.fortheshore.org to find out about opportunities to volunteer on beach clean up teams. There's one this Saturday, February 23. I volunteered a few weeks ago and I highly recommend it to everyone. It's only four hours but you can make such a huge difference, and you can help the beach open on time!
I was at Sandy Hook again this past Saturday helping to clear sand from the pavilion at North Beach. Before leaving I got a chance to speak with a ranger and I asked specifically what they mean when they say on the nps.gov site that Sandy Hook is reopening on May 1, and the three beaches (B, Gunnison and North) are reopening on Memorial Day. Because quite frankly that's been confusing the heck out of me ever since they posted it.
This ranger said that beaches B, Gunnison and North will be accessible when the park reopens May 1. When they say those beaches are reopening on Memorial Day, they mean that's when lifeguards will be back on duty at those locations.
Overall the park looks very good. Some areas look untouched, but others still look pretty beat up. They've done a lot of work getting things put back together but they're far from finished. The main road back still needs repaving, and the first side road to lot G is currently impassable (you can easily get to Lot G using the back way). The Seagull's Nest is not expected to reopen until mid summer at the earliest. Most restroom facilities and showers are still out so they have to bring in porta-potts. The bike path still needs work in some areas. And the other beaches (C, E, Fisherman's) aren't expected to reopen any time soon.
I encourage everyone to go the first chance they get (I'm going Saturday May 4 regardless of the weather) and please consider buying a season parking pass even if you don't need one. They're going to need all they help they can get to continue restoring the park.
