Encountering Clothed Hikers
Return to DiscussionsSo...I'm curious...when out hiking nude, what do you do when you encounter other hikers, presumably wearing cloths? This came up earlier in the week when I was hiking nude in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of Northern NM, and came across a couple. I know some have posted here that they carry "emergency" textiles...maybe a loin cloth they can put on, just in case. My policy has always been to pick trails that aren't used a lot, to minimize chance encounters, but not carry anything with me. I figure that I'm not really doing anything wrong, so why act ashamed? When possible, I will avoid encounters, which happened on this week's hike. I saw this other couple way up the trail...don't think they saw me...and just stepped off the trail for a bit until they passed. But, if the unavoidable encounter occurs, I just keep walking. Curious to know how other nude hikers handle that. Thanks.
In France, walking naked is considered as sexual exhibition and this can be sanctioned by a very heavy fine and even imprisonment, so one must take more precautions than in other European countries where it is possible.
Thats why I always have something to cover myself with. That said, it only happened once.At best, the exchange is a friendly hello and the person crossed is not disturbed by your nakedness.She can be shocked without going any further.At worst, the clothed person must complain and have evidence which is very difficult if the place is deserted without other human presences...but there have already been trials...
Very interesting! I always thought that Europe was more at ease with social nudity, so to hear it's illegal in France is news to me. I know there are nude beaches in the French Riveria, and I assume they are officially sanctioned. Am I correct? Thanks.

In the UK it is not illegal to walk naked, as long as your not seen to cause distress to others, obviously i wouldnt go naked down the high street or past a school, but i do tend to walk quiet paths and try to avoid textiles
