Then vs. Now
Just curious to know everyone's opinions on what you think has changed over time and what do you think are the primary causes of those changes?
Something that comes to mind is how all these vintage, black and white, Naturist magazines seem to depict people being for comfortable having their pictures taken than people today. I am far to young to know how it was back then, but I do assume not everyone was fine with having their picture taken. However, from what I have seen and read, it does seem that people back before colour photography were more comfortable with having their picture taken when nude.
I contribute this mainly to the internet and the ease of the transfer of media. Before the internet, it was a whole not harder and more expensive to make and distribute copies of a photo. When someone took you photograph, they would first have to have it developed, which could take days to weeks depending one how frequently they took pictures of people and things. You had to wait until the camera role was finished before taking it in to get developed. Once developed, there would usually be only one set of negatives that could be used to make copies from. The creation of additional negatives is a whole other process. In most cases only one or two copies of a photo would ever be made, one for the family and maybe a copy for any other people in the photo that might want one. If and when you wanted to look at a photo, you would have to search through shoe boxes, or if you were organized, photo albums, to find it. And how often do people go looking through their family photo albums? The point is, that before the internet people had little worry that a photo of them at a naturist resort or club, was going to be seen by anyone but those they would be fine with seeing a nude photo of them. Also there was the size of commercial cameras. It was way harder to hide and use a camera back then than it is now.
Now, we have cameras in that take photos and video, in stylish glasses. We have cameras in every cell phone that people feel naked without. Someone can take a picture of you without you even knowing; and in less than a minute is can be uploaded to a website to be seen by countless unknown people for all eternity. Or until the internet crashes.
It is also well documented and undeniable that people are just plain less comfortable with casual nudity now than in the past. I am in my 40s, and I can remember then it was not uncommon for kids to run naked through sprinklers on the front lawn. Now a days, you would have multiple people call the cops on you and could run the risk of having your kids taken away from you. Parents used to be able to take their kids into public change rooms, and no one would bat an eye. Now every pool and public place needs to have family change rooms separate from anyone else, so on one has to be subjected to the sight of a nude body other than their own or their child's. Change rooms in Schools have changed; they used to be open rooms with showers on the walls. My niece says they don't have to change for Gym class anymore; and when they do, the change-rooms are all small changing stalls so no one can see you and she was shocked to hear that people used to shower at school let alone with other same gendered people.
It is a whole lot easier to take pictures of things and people, today, than it has ever been, as everyone seems to have a camera on them at all times and in all places. Yet people are less inclined to take pictures of their own kids in public, than they ever have been. A friend of mine literally had the cops called on him because he was taking pictures of his son at a public Park. Some prude, "concerned mother" called the cops because she thought he was taking random pictures of children for nefarious reasons. He had no issue showing the police the pictures on his phone as they were all of his son, at the Park, doing normal things kids do at playgrounds. There might have been some other kids in the background, but that should not have been a problem. Even the police thought the prude mother was way off her rocker for wasting their time with something so pointless and trivial as a father taking pictures of his son at play.
So that is my opinion: what is your?
I do think that the ease in which photos can be taken, distributed, and become public domain, effects peoples willingness to be photographed. However, I also think the nature of nudity and nudism has changed. It used to be much more viewed as something healthy true to its modern origins. Being outdoor playing in the sun naked was good for you. That attitude has mostly been lost to all but the die hard nudists. I think that has changed how nudist are now portrayed in photos. The demographic has also become older. Then of course there is another big factor -- pornography and the wide availability of pornographic images. How has that effected nudist photography? That requires so thought.
yes, "nudism" ... is much different as modern technology has made "explicit" photography more accessible.
The difference now mostly lies in the definition and use/purpose of pornography. Sites like TN are few because most nudity today IS for 'titilation' and XXX-citement.
The "natural" element of nudism, . . . practiced by most member of TN and other similar groups is rare today. Some sexually active persons do visit legitimate "natural nudist" sites and camps/resorts.....but for those who are seeking sexual environments....places like Jamaica's Hedonism resorts are more likely used by the "active" nudists who are not "natural" but much more sexual.
Phone apps: Kik, . . . Telegram . . . Whats app, . . . even Snap Chat are for titilation, not nature.
It seems more generational, but definitely a sub-culture separating "nature" from sex.
Years ago cameras were forbidden in most every nudist resort or on the beaches as were how you acted like women didn't expose there pussy which was unshaven as were the men and jewelry on or in breast or pussy and cocks was a very very rare thing to see
One thing I remember most about my first visit to a nudist resort as a single male was the amount of nudist families there having fun splashing in the lake and laughing it up. There were so many on the beach that day that I had to sit farthest away from the water. Now as athe father of our twelve year old son who we've been raising as a nudist since he was born he's often the only child we see when we visit there. Thankfully Cedar Trails in SW Ohio holds a yearly Nudist Youth Camp where parents can spend six days there with their children as they learn about the nudist life, science, and math to build such projects as a weather vane and gliders. We attended the camp with our son and were delighted to see the number of families in attendance. Hopefully more nudist resorts will also provide such camps to increase the number of nudist families partaking in and helping to sustain the nudist life circle. After all the majority of nudists we see every year are getting up there in age. Our hope is that the younger generations of today will experience the joy of being nudists and pass on the benefits of social nudism on to their children.
A few years ago a single mother created a TN group here for nudist families to discuss topics on raising children as nudists. Unfortunately the group didn't last long.
Interesting question
With the new A-I effects coming out things are changing for the young. I have seen the 60 minute show about young people and how they changed a picture around to show them naked. The picture started out with clothes but was changed. Plus with phone cameras its easy to just take a picture of yourself naked and send it to whoever.
Those b/w pictures were of models that signed a release. And they were paid usually for posing. I remember when I was younger, and just trying to get a picture developed of us naked was almost impossible. We had to go to a specific store and hope that an extra copy wasnt made. But then they were fairly tame pictures of us. Usually after we had come back from vacation and took pictures of us with our new tans. Lol but now we have all these pictures in a second that we can enjoy. Or even send to people.

Valley View Hot Springs/The Orient Land Trust also held a youth science camp. While not being nudist focused, it was held at a clothing optional location. It was typically sold out. My wife and I helped teach, and because of where it was held, it brought in some top specialist in there fields. This was a wonderful few days for families and those running it. It was derailed by Covid and retirement of the main organizer. Hopefully it will be rebooted next year.
