Nudism vs Naturism
"While
nudists simply prefer being naked, naturists embrace an entire culture and
lifestyle The former is a preference,
while the latter is a philosophy." - Rae, Augustine (2015-02-02). The
Freedom of Naturism: A Guide for the How and Why of Adopting a Naturist
Lifestyle (Kindle Location 116-120).
Here is a description of the difference between Naturism and nudism
from Among the Nudist - Early Naturism by Francis and Mason
Merrill:
"The primary concern of the dyed-in-the-wool
naturists, on the contrary, was the need of living in accord with
natural laws, which they construed to mean an outdoor life,
exercise, and adherence to a vegetarian diet, while abstaining from
artificial stimulants, tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Because the
natural garb of man is his skin, and clothes interfere with the
free use of the natural remedies sun, air and
water they regarded the practice of nudity as
an important feature of a healthy life. Vegetarianism, however,
they considered even more essential." - Merrill, Frances
(2013-04-16). Among the Nudists - Early Naturism (Kindle Locations
595-599). Read Books Ltd..
Vegetarianism, however, they considered even more essential
I'm no expert, but I would think you'd have to go back quite a ways
back to find humans on a strictly vegetarian diet such as nuts and
berries and leaves etc. Maybe a half million years or so.
I've always thought that by the time modern humans came on
the scene, 60K-100K years ago, we'd already developed a taste for
at least bone marrow if not even meat. So if it's okay with
everybody here, I'll continue to have my rabbit food with Ranch
dressing right before my steak.... and still consider myself a
Naturist.
Other than that, I like the definition.
Cgd02, you have some
great points. Does nudism mean you have
to want to be nude whenever possible or can I be a nudist simply because I
prefer to be nude when I sleep?
Why should we define
ourselves into such a small category?
I agree. In fact I have written elsewhere that in
order to raise public awareness we need to tell everybody they are a
nudist. By that I mean stick to the
minimalistic definition of nudism as being a preference for nudity, whether it
is only by one's self and only in the shower.
That may be there only preference for nudity. Then they will be in a better position
mentally to understand. If they can see
themselves as a nudist they will be more sympathetic to nudism.
