Nevada Wilderness
Doesn't seem to be a lot of posting in this stream lately. I didn't see any discussion of hiking in any of the over a dozen wilderness areas in Nevada (Humboldt-ToiyabeNF). These are vast areas with seldom used trails. These are not desert areas; they include the forested mountains with Aspen, firs and meadows. Trailheads lie in the canyon bottoms where there often are primitive camp spots (ie. firering). I've hiked in many of them and never meet anyone.
Why don't you tell us some more about it and then there will be more posts here.
There is quite a bit of interest in hiking in areas where there is an opportunity to be nude,
Perhaps the trails you mention aren't known to many hikers here.
Okay. First let me acknowledge that these Wilderness and trails are not just out the back door. Unless happen to live in one if the small towns there is a fair amount of effort to get to them. That's why they are so lonely.
Mt. Moriah (North Snake Range) . Nearest town: Baker. Trails start in each of the east side canyons and are accessible in regular vehicle over dirt roads. Trail to the top starts in Hendrys Creek. Horse Canyon is further north. The crown jewel is Smith Creek Canyon which rivals Zion.
On the west side 4wd is needed to get up to the plateau. There are many primitive campsites. Shingle Cliffs overlook Smith Creek and Mt Moriah and has a good place to camp. Trails on this side are not well maintained or marked but the old roads and open country make it easy to cross-country thru Aspen, fir and meadows. There are lots of 4wd routes on this side that continue north into BLM lands and Marble Wash. All is great for free hiking and naked 4wd. But be prepared- there is nothing out there, including cell coverage. And don't go in hunting season.
Next post- Schell Creek Range
Schell Creek Range: east of Ely, Nevada. This is a relatively new wilderness with few established trails. However, the open country on the high country of this limestone range allow for unencumbered hiking. The Fawn 4wd trail crosses into the area north of the wilderness.
There are places to create a primitive campsite and numerous ridges and stream courses inviting crosscountry hiking.
Table Mountain, Monitor Range. Nearest civilization: Belmont, nearest town: Tonopah. This is somewhat better known, but mostly for the camping spots outside of the Wilderness in the canyon bottoms. Several trails climb UP to the 'Table' a vast high elevation plateau. Trails and old roads (now closed) crisscross the area. Pornographic carvings can be found in several Aspen groves, left by lonely sheepherders long ago. The Wilderness is generally empty until elk hunting season.
Out there! There are not many places more remote than the Grant and Quinn Canyon Wilderness areas and the nearby wilderness study areas around Lunar Crater. Fairly good graded roads skirt these areas branching off the lonely stretch of US6 between Ely and Tonopah. This is definitely dark skies country. Troy Canyon, Cherry Creek, Irwin Canyon and Quinn Canyon are the best routes in. Trails are poorly marked and rarely maintained. Trails (such as they are) climb pretty quickly. The open country on the tops of these mountains are easy to cross country but bring a map. This is truly wilderness, you are on your own. Due to the distance to get there, camping in the canyon or overnight in Tonopah or Ely (pretty cheap).
Former Elko resident here. My job had me wandering all over northern Nevada. My first nude hiking experience was there. There too many places to explore naked out there to count. The only downside is that I have had some bad experiences with bugs during part of the year.
