After taking the best part of the day to compose my reply, it's good to see the other Aussies chiming in with their perspectives in the meantime!
It seems we have a small army capable of pushing back, at least where we cannot exercise the nude option!
We cannot all be nude all of the time, but it does seem we take what steps we can as circumstances allow!
Also should mention the rise of the internet to facilitate purchase of briefer designs. The days of finding a men's string swim thong in a department store seem long gone!
Edit: purchased at Daimaru, Melbourne, early1990s. Still wearable.
Why are there so many nudists talking about their swim shorts? And if you cant be nude and must wear something does it really matter what size it is?
To me, it makes sense to encourage even nudists to wear the minimun when you can't be nude.
Brief swimwear where nudity is not permitted, shorter shorts, men being shirtless as much as possible all fit into this category.
As an Aussie, when I was at the primary and secondary school swimming pools and then the YMCA pool, in the 1950's and 1960's, Speedos and the like were almost mandatory. I was very shy, but tried hard to ignore the fact that I was incredibly skinny.
In the US up until the mid to late 1970's, the standard and in many cases required "swimwear" in male only locations was noting.
Actually I think men should be proud of that bulge and not hide it. What I believe men worry about is getting erections while at a beach where the women are wearing next to nothing. Sad case, but real. That is why I love going to nude beaches. No clothing needed and my genitals can swing freely.

From what I've read the law in a lot of places in the USA state that it's not illegal to be naked so long as the genitals aren't exposed so a naked woman is legal so long as she isn't doing anything lewd or sexualy suggestive whereas a man's genitals are on display as soon as he is naked.
If I have to wear anything for swimming then small speedos such as Aussiebum 1.5 WJ are good as they give plenty of room for your cock and balls. Likewise Ergowear which specialise in a good pouch. Why squash your balls when you can see them anyway? Display them comfortably in a pouch. The only problem with the 1.5 WJ speedos is that they are just too small to cover if you get an erection whereas the trunks style Ergowear pouch stretches but still covers.
I think it's always a question of the traditions and the actual fashion. As a man you can't wear a skirt. Until the early 20th century women can't wear trousers. In my youth the actual fashion for women were hotpants. And as a boy you can't suddenly wear no pair of shorts because it was woman clothing.
And of course the best beachwear is to be nude. I think there is nothing as useless as swimming trunks.

All. Clothes. Are. For. All. People.
Men can wear skirts. Women can wear trousers. Boys can wear shorts. Everyone can wear whatever clothes they want.
If anyone gives someone crap about what they are wearing, they are the ones with the issues. Not the person wearing the clothes.
Life is too short to not wear the clothes you want to wear, or are comfortable on your body.
