Why do people create / join groups?

Looking through the list of groups on this site it's easy to see the diversity of the nudist community. There's representation of various walks of life, interests and locations. Presumably these groups are created in the hopes of meeting others in the category the group represents and possibly having group discussions about the topic.

But looking at some of the established groups there seems to be very little recent discussions going on and in some cases very few members. So what other purpose do the groups serve?

Personally I join the groups that I have for the reasons above, finding others with similar interests and having discussions. But is that the case with other users? Are there other uses for the groups?

Granted, I'm not advocating that we get rid of the groups or questioning the motives of some of the groups creators. But it almost seems like there's too many groups. (In some cases there are duplicate or groups with very similar topics.) It's hard to find a single tree in the forrest of groups on the site. Would it be a good idea to prune some of the dead and redundant groups to allow others to grow?

Yes, it's true there are many dead groups with no posts or very ancient posts and little or no activity. I also joined a number of groups because of shared interest but because of non-activity I began to cull them on a monthly basis. I am now down to one group only, Ker-Bares which is active daily on a number of subjects. There are also a number of (mostly inactive) groups which duplicate other groups. The total number of groups on TN are very unwieldy and again most of them are dead or inactive. Why people create groups then never post to them or join groups and never post to them puzzles me.

Another question is why do people join groups for a category they don't belong to? I don't think any group should exclude others (though I do understand the desire to not have users who might seek to disrupt the group's discussions with negative or counter productive posts). But I notice a few people joining groups I'm in like Florida groups when their profile says they're not a resident or Black Nudists when their profile picture is of a Caucasian person. Do people get some sort of points based on the number of groups they're members of?

why even bother starting a group if you have no intention to even contributing one post or responding to any posts that may be there? if you have no intention to make even one post then don't bother creating the group.

It would be a time saver if only TN indicate when was the most recent posting to the group. I also agree with the idea of an email advising that there has been a posting to a group.
