Stirring a French press...

I know you are meant to stir coffee in a French press. I have done it before, but I usually don't. I don't think I could tell the difference if there was a cash prize involved. Does anyone know what the deal is with stirring?

I think the stirring is to be sure all the coffee is exposed to the hot water, but actually the pouring of the water into the coffee is usually stirring enough. I no longer use the french press as I really don't like the sediment at the bottom of the cup.
