Sometimes, our only means to help is to get the word out that help is needed. Whether it be hurricane, tsunami, earthquake,wildfire, volcano, famine. war, poverty or flooding victims, etc...
Can we each, individually, help everyone? Probably not. But, we can get the information - that someone, somewhere- is in desperate need of help. That in its self is a means of help and support. I'm sorry, but I truly feel that to take a thread about the flooding victims of Pakistan and to say, on a site thathas anInternational membership, that we need to"take care of Americans first", is callous at best.
While I agree with Rabbit, that many of us are already stretched to their thinnest, I also know, that in the simplest of ways, we can always dig just a little deeper. Here is something I learned from my mom, a truly amazing woman. Several years ago, when everyone was trying to figure out what to get her for her birthday, she told us all...I don't need anything. Don't waste your money. Instead,take whatever you would spend on a gift for me and use it to help the women of Afghanistan and provided us all with the name and address of a well researched organization. We've all taken to doing that at Christmas and our birthdays. Great way to help others without using funds we wouldn't already be spending.
For those ofus who are in a position to help financially with the Pakistani flood victims, Phil has posted an excellent link. For those of us who just can't donate...pass the information along to those who can.

I agree! When it comes to human suffering, where ever in the world, as the community of Man, we are called to help. Private donations are the only way to go. I am loathe to see the American government make a grand gesture in promising millions of dollars in aid. In order to do that we would have to borrow the money from the Chinese and then pay it back with interest. I believe that our government, meaning American since this is an International site, should use its power of influence to encourage other nations, especially Eastern and Middle Eastern governments to open their pocketbooks and provide the aid that is needed.
i'm not against helping others in need but i think we should take care of our own. there are still lots of people still needing help from katrina, homeless shelters are at capacity across the country and many people need jobs. lets keep the charity where the jobs belong, here at home.

As a reminder to everyone - this site has an International Membership - there are 141 Pakistani members - this site is HOME for many countries - not just the USA.

p.s Interesting fact regarding Hurricane Katrina International Aid Response - "On September 4, 2005 Pakistan offered to send a team of doctors and paramedics to support the relief agencies. Pakistan had also pledged USD 1 million through the Red Cross."
