Gender Equality, or Lack of in the Nudist Community
First off, I have no problem with men; however, I am not gay and my best friendships over the years have generally been with women. I also just find women more interesting. With that in mind, what I have observed on this website is that the ratio of men to women ranges from 11 to 1 to 14 to 1 depending on what subgrouping you look at. For example, if you look at the total number of people who have signed up on the site, it is 14:1. If you look at the group which has logged on over the past year and have posted a picture, it is 11:1. The one place where this is blown out of the water is for certified members. This option is not popular with women; the ratio is 74:1. With this background I have two questions: (1) is this reflective of the general nudist population, in the US or elsewhere; it seems like in some countries it is more balanced; and (2) if it is not reflective, why is it skewed on True Nudist? What are your observation and thought on these questions? I have posted a blog on this if you would like more details on the break down, and my observations and thoughts (see blogs under my page).
We have to agree about the ratio of men to women. As a couple, we also struggle with the ratio of male only, female only and couples. Also, the ratio of couples that are here for purpose of true nudism vs. an alternative lifestyle.
What do you think? This is just a feeling but I would bet that greater than 90% of couples are true nudist to use the lingo of the site. There are a few here because they are "swingers". It is probably a little less than 90% for women (say 80%), but for men, it would guess may be 50%. May be less. However, even with that reduction, that is a lot of nudist men.
One of the reasons there are proportionately fewer certified women is that a fair number of the "female" profiles, particularly the youngest ones, are actually guys, and therefore of course uncertifiable. I'm part of a European nudist site, which strictly forbids even remotely sexual photos - not even pics in the shower are allowed - has no video chat feature, and carefully administrates its blogs. It rejects photos without appropriate meta-data, which precludes stolen ones. It's still almost all guys.
Several reasons for the skewed ratio come to mind:
Bad experiences on the site for women, of course, as has been commented.
Men are way more visual, so a picture-heavy site attracts them (thus, TN charges to see more pictures, but allows free access to all the text.)
Women are much more at risk than men for mis-use of posted photos.
Mixed-sex conversations, in life and online, tend to get taken over by the men.
Women are more likely to have a real social life that pulls them away from the keyboard.
All of this is web-specific (except for the bad-experience part), and does not speak to the actual, flesh-and-blood world of social nudism.
In my "real world" experience, I know more females that are nudist than males. It seems like there are two groups of nudists - the "closet" ones who exist mostly on the web, and the ones who live the lifestyle in the real world. It seems like I'm one of the few who exist in both worlds. When I show my young nudist female friends this site they have no interest at all in joining.
I would take it one step further NoTanLines. I find, in the real world, that it doesn't make any difference if the lady is dressed or not. I have heard jerks being rude and obnoxious when the lady is fully clothed. A jerk, is a jerk, is a jerk!! I am sure that we guys, and gals, have made uncalled for or rude comments about someones appearance at one time or another. I know, when younger, much younger, and having had more then I needed to drink that I surely have. I don't remember specifics, but I am human, as are all of us. AND, I am sure that any comment I made was not made directly to the individual. My parents taught me better than that! I have been taught, and taught my children, to respect peoples feelings. Why can't we treat ALL people like we would like to be treated? A person is a person with or without clothes, and should be treated with the respect you would want to be treated with!!!
It's an interesting contradiction. Nudist websites feature mainly women to entice men with a carnal temptation. And then so many nudist clubs and resorts ban single males just in case they might have some carnal intent.
