Sandy Bay: Is there a best time to go?
I tried this beach once (mid-afternoon) and can't say I felt relaxed. I am used to being naked in Spain and France, but never in Africa before. There were quite a few men who wanted to check out and compare with other guys, which I found uncomfortable. There were a few fishing rods which also make me feel uncomfortable, whether I am clothed or not (I am convinced I will lose an eye to an errant hook one day), but most of all the local fully clad youths (i.e. trousers and sweat shirts) walking up and down the beach looking like they will nick your stuff if you shut your eyes. The 95% male balance didn't really help the feeling of being a bit off, with the few girls understandably hiding in the rocks.
I guess my question is whether I was unlucky, or there at the wrong time of day, or perhaps it is just not suitable as a place to relax on your own. I can just wait to the European summer after all, and not bother with being air-free for the Southern Summer (especially given the water is iceberg cold), but I fear I am missing out by not trying it different days of the week / times of the day.
Hi Aardvark. This is pretty normal. The beach is predominately gay. I went there today, and my experience was a lot better than before. There was no creeps watching me and making me uncomfortably. Around 5pm most people start leaving, and I was able to go for a swim and walk around naked which was amazing.
Later in the afternoon is always best, especially in mid-summer to avoid the scorching heat. Just don't get caught around sunset on the path back to the parking as it can be dangerous (muggers). Try not to take any valuables with you. Watching the sunset from the car park or the little cove just below it is worth it.
