Ceilidh

Is a ceilidh Scottish or Irish? More to the point is it right to wear a kilt? I'm hoping to. And I'm hoping my hem will rise during some of the dances.

Celtic.

BTW Olly, your status has reverted back to 'textile' so keep your kilt on!

According to Wikipedia, a cilidh or cil is a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering so it can be either. From another site: "Ceilidhs are good social events to show off your Kilt with the spins and whirls displaying the kilt in all its glory!"

That's just what I was hoping. The spins and whirls will show off what's under the kilt in all it's glory

I had never heard of a ceilidh before this thread. While being shown the recreation building in the condo community where we just bought a unit, there was a sign for a St. Patrick's Ceilidh. I thought the coincidence was funny. Unfortunately we won't be able to attend.
