Naturist/Nudist Revolution
Hi Everyone! I'm new here, but not new to naturism, so I'm not sure if a question like this has been asked before, but here we go...
Do you think there will ever be a nude/body freedom revolution where non-sexual public nudity is generally considered just another normal way to dress yourself? If so, when do you think it would happen and what would be the catalyst?
Personally I really don't know. I think challenges to overcome, not exhaustive, are the sexualization of anything remotely related to the body; the attitudes passed generation to generation that the body is something that, morally, must be covered; and the idea that someone should be embarrassed by their body if it is not up to some aesthetic ideal.
I feel like the hardest one to overcome would be educating people that social nudity is in itself not an invitation to a sexual relationship. People won't adopt nudity in a public space if they constantly feel sexually threatened (I'm talking about the general public, not cool nudies).
As the world is now, significant improvement in nude acceptance would be very slow in coming. But change can happen quickly sometimes when drastic things happen. The first drastic happenings i would expect to result in tighter regulation of anything that people relate to morality. However since morality cannot be forced externally, it has to come from inside a person. After awhile when everything comes to a head, the crisis passed, things would do a drastic swing the other way and among the survivors clothing would no longer have anything to do with morality. Nobody would even bother to wear anything except for special occasions. But thats a simplistic view. Relating a few details while not outlining the whole scenario.
I don't think there can be a society-wide naturist / nudist revolution. Clothing is much too valuable for social signaling. It's not hard for a society to carve out times and places for nudity, where there are firm social expectations, and not hard for a subculture to tolerate nudity - in both cases because individuals who violate norms are socially sanctioned and made unwelcome at the venue or in the group. So we have some nude beaches, or sunbathe in some parks; wiccans and sadhus and hippies can practice naked, the nudist community can carry on as a subculture. These groups and places might be broader - yards and gardens, athletic facilities, dormitories, etc., but can never sweep in the whole society.
Look at San Francisco's experiment. Nudity on the street? In the grocery store? Shoulder-to-shoulder on a crowded subway? Cockrings? Sadomasochistic paraphernalia? Schoolyards? The easiest place to draw the line was to ask people to put clothes back on, except at organized events.
Nudists and nudist wannabes are the only people who might favor wider acceptance of public nudity, but they are generally much too timid to admit that they sometimes prefer to live clothes free. So, our approach to this problem has always been to discuss it among ourselves and hope that it will change, of course no one else has any interest in making any changes, so nothing happens. We need to take a more activist approach, or nothing will ever change.
There enough perverts out there that will take social nudity to mean an invasion to sex and people will end up having to fend off these prediters even more than they do now. It is easier, as has been stated, to try and remove the temptation by covering up everyone. The demented will still pray on those that they find desirable but society will be able to say we did everything we could to protect them.
It could happen here, but if it does I believe it will take many years. My premise derives from a look at fashion over the last century or so. Even in Europe where there is a much more relaxed attitude toward nudity, there is also the sexual component. Full length dresses and men dressed in suits and ties was the norm for many outings including trips to the shore and parks. Today it is shorts and tee shirt. Swimwear once covered most of the body and what was even a tiny bikini a generation ago would be considered quite modest by today's standards. Also look at what is being worn on the awards shows red carpets. Except for some well placed patches of cloth, an number of those women are nearly nude. I will conjecture that it is more of a sex display than anything else because if the same actress is caught topless or heaven forbid, nude, it becomes national news. I would love to be able to be nude in my own yard, at the beach, or in public places of recreation, but I don't think that I would want to go grocery shopping while nude. For a nudist movement to take hold, we probably would have to engage in civil disobedience, but that has to be done in large groups to be effective, and it would take some dedicated leaders to form those groups. The WBNR seems to grow and that is a pretty good start, but it too seems to attract more spectators than participants.
Interesting responses... I gather that we all agree that this will happen in exactly 198 years, jk.
I bet the best method for spreading the idea is lead by setting a good example and leaving a good impression (maybe directed at the people in society designated to dictate morals and attitudes).
The last poster is correct that even modern standards are leaps and bounds away from where we were 60 years ago. I think as late as the 1960s it was illegal for a man to be topless in Central Park (NYC). Things change fast constantly!
You say you want a revolution...
This is a complicated topic for a complicated world without simple answers.
To me it all comes down to the conflicting energies of loving people and using things vs. loving things and using people.
Nudism is dangerous because it exposes us to be regular vulnerable humans simply worthy of love for the imperfection we are. It's not sexualized like porn nor does it desexualize us like religion can, but leaves both the sexual and spiritual body to be one and same, both and neither, it is just what it is.
There is no power or controlled ability to change others by accepting and loving them, for it gives them the freedom to simply be themselves, including naked.
There is power in making others insecure by objectifying them. This can be done with fashion, religion, porn or even something as noble as medicine in its mechanistic view of the human body. That is its shadow, but these things are also drivers for change good or bad which cannot be undone, making them great liberators for some and oppressive to others.
Nudity to me is a simple and relatively stupid thing. Look no underpants! I have a penis and a butt crack! Taking the pants off my mind and showing the crack of my wounds is more challenging, and they are one and the same, so perhaps it's a good start.
Help me to love others and use things and to seek contentment and real change in that. Help me to say no to using others and loving things - which everyone seems to say brings verifiable, concrete happiness, but it's a happiness which quickly turns to dust, whereas the nudas veritas of life is vague but fundamentally affirming.
You say you want a revolution. Well, you know you can count me in.
How long did it take for bikinis and thongs to become popular?
If someone could calculate how many of the Earths population currently, already has a nude picture on the internet, ehat would that number be?
As I read through the Bible i notice allot of nudity, snd i don't see God condemning any of them. I don't think He has the problem with it.
The only thing i worry about if nudity would become the norm. If we would see more or less perverted behavior. As iit is now with the nude beaches and resorts, people are able to controll some of this bad behavior. However, if during the course of a year everyone just stopped wearing clothes for whatever reason, would there be unearrented behavior that we wouldn't want to have happen.?
Jist a few things i randomly think about.
