I am a very active Freehiker. I am lucky to live next to a wilderness area in my state (montana). It's the smallest wilderness area in the state, so few ever use it. I have never ran into anyone there. I have Freehiked in some really nice National Parks too. Favorite place? Death Valley, an overwhelming place. Way more to it then meets the eye. Scarest place? Bob Marshall Wilderness, south of Glacier Park, no people......just Grizzly Bears! It's still Freehiking if you have to wear a sidearm right? Ha. Funnest place? Joshua Tree, so many hidden wonderful spots there, a real gem of a place. I can't wait for spring. Freehiker 4 ever
I feel it is still freehiking even when I wear a sidearm. I always do with the abundance of feral dogs, coyotes, wolves, and even a mountain lion out here.
I enjoy freehiking along the rivers in my area, very few people come along to disturb the tranquility, and the insects on Vancouver Island are few and far between. Such a feeling of nature, it is impossible to describe to those who have not experienced it!
cheri we are going backwards in America rather than foward when it comes to nudity even california has cracked down, i think these politicians would have more important things to do but apparently not.
Pisgah Nat'l Forest where the group campsite is turned the regulation of its grounds to local authorities plus the NC laws uphold it unfortunately.
Greatest way to enjoy the outdoors is to be nude and hiking / camping is no different. Problem always is finding a location where you don't run the risk of offending others and find an LEO waiting for you when you return to the car. Over the years I have found that the western part of the U.S. is much more amenable to freehiking, both in terms of opportunity as well as the attitudes of people. Of course, with so much open area, the possibility of meeting others in these isolated areas is not that high.
Enjoyed a 5 day nude backpacking/camping trip in the Ocala National Forest last summer. Bugs and heat weren't too bad in the forest and there was a spring feed pond that served as a great place to cool off and relax after a day's hike. Only passed one other hiker and he was down to his backpack and a pair of brief running shorts, but it was during a downpour so our encounter was very brief as we were each headed back to our shelter.

But the way I understand it, State laws don't have sway in National parks, forests, monuments, etc. because there are no National laws against nudism. Most judges throw such suits out without trial.
