old school
Our school used the local leisure centre for swimming lessons so swimwear was compulsory but the games master insisted on showers following PE sessions, they were the usual open gang showers. They were my first experience of nudity with others apart from very close mates. Every time I see the film 'Kes' it brings back memories.
Until I was an adult, I had no idea that guys swam nude in pools, although in that era ( 1960s) I suppose they were doing it at the YMCA. My junior and senior high schools didn't have pools But we showered nude daily from 7th grade to 12th after PE, so I was accustomed to being nude with other boys for that activity. Somewhere I had discovered the joy of skinny-dipping though, probably alone at a lake, and loved the feeling.
I went to grad school in 1975 and learned that just the previous year the U had discontinued nude swimming in the pools at the "men's" and "women's" gyms. I felt very betrayed :-). The U had 3 other huge gyms with pools, nobody was forced to use gender segregated facilities. I don't know of any pool facilities outside of established nude venues that still allow nude swimming.
The local YMCA had nude swimming. Even swimming lessons were conducted nude. I remember I had two teachers, one remained nude like the rest of us and the other wore a very small speedo type suit. I moved out of the area in the early 70s and was disappointed to find that the "Y" in my new town did not have nude swimming. I was told they did in the 50s and 60s but because of some mothers objections the practice stoped in the late 60s. I really miss those days. There was a lot more socializing in the locker rooms back then. Now everyone showers in their underwear (which I will never understand) and never makes eye contact let alone speak. My old "Y" also had a mens health club for members only. It had a sauna, hot tub, steam room and a lounge area with a TV. I was only in there a few times but I remember thinking how nice it was that the whole area was nude. Men sitting watching TV and being social in a nude setting. Imagine that in a health club today. I'm sure someone would have a real issue over that and get it changed very quickly. Socially I don't think we are moving forward at all.

Actually, one of the Y's in my area still has such an area for adult men only, and a separate locker room for kids. It's wonderful. About half the guys use it nude, others wear suits. I know one of the board members, who told me they considered a remodel that would eliminate it but enough men supported it that it survived. Yes, the exception, but nice to know it still exists.
