HI...our years match...was Great Lakes for Boot Camp, then Newport for QM 'A' School. 13 months in Adak, Alaska working in SAR Ops with Ads, then the remainder of my enlistment aboard USS Hancock (CVA 19) for two WestPacs/Yankee Station. Used to sunbathe on a former gun deck on the 010 level but never naked there. That didn't happen until my first year after discharge, when my ex and I visited our first nudist camp with friends. From the moment I felt the breeze all over my naked body, I was sold, and have enjoyed being a nudist ever since.

I only spent 9 months on the USS Kitty Hawk, in 1968, after Boot training at Great Lakes. I applied for Weather school in Lakehurst NY and was accepted. From there I was sent to Fleet Numerical Weather Center in Monterey California.

I just became a shellback less than 2 years ago. I was in 7th Fleet AOR. We did it twice while I was out there. It is definitely not the same from the stories I heard from older Sailors. We keep the camaraderie alive, but everything has been watered down. 80 percent of the things they did in the old Navy would be consider hazing now-a-days. One older Sailor told me the story of how they all just got naked afterwards and threw their clothes overboard and washed off all of the grime on the flight deck instead of going to their berthing. That could never happen in today's Navy. We can't even walk around naked in our berthing now. hahaha The guy telling the story was also on an all-male ship too.
