Visited Orient Bay September 28, 2019
It's sad. Rumors of Papagayo being back in operation are false. Resort is abandoned. Papagayo concrete roof is collapsed into building. None of the cottages are repaired or being repaired. Some even had their foundations uprooted from the sand base. Loose debris has been removed from skeletons of cottages and market remain. Beach is usable. It appears that all debris has been removed from immediately off the beach in the swimming area. Where, three years ago, there were 500 beach umbrellas in use daily, there were only 20 or so in use now. Maybe 60-80 people were using the beach on an ideal day. There are no toilets. There is a shack at the parking lot selling drinks and light food. If going, best to contract a taxi to return at a specified time to return you where you want.
It wasn't Papagayos that was rebuilt, it was the Perch beach bar (now it is the Perch lite, since it has no electricity). Sounds exactly the same as we found it last September. Remember, this is low season so the beach looks deserted. On orientbeachforums.com there have been high season beach reports that say the beach gets crowded. We walked through the resort and found the remnants of our favorite mini suite (#156). It's the only one that is even standing at all.
