From time to time, someone has commented that they saw that I visited their profile page.
How do they know that?

If you're certified, or a paying customer, I can't remember which, it shows up as viewers in your own menu options.

Those statements are correct; you see who dropped by. I will sometimes go and visit the folks to view their profile also. If they have interests similar to mine or seem like an interesting person, I give them a return message to see if future conversation is warranted. For the most part...they usually don't respond but it takes little effort on my part to say 'hello'.
