Couchsurfing is out on money. Will go out of business soon if we do not help

All of us who are members of Couchsurfing believe in something greater than money, possessions, and status. It took over 14 years for the Couchsurfing community to come together. Without your immediate help, this community will be lost forever.

Given the challenging realities brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Couchsurfing will soon be unable to meet our financial obligations. We have reduced the size of our team, taken pay cuts, eliminated or renegotiated all contracts, eliminated our physical office space (we are now a 100% remote workforce), and applied for COVID-19 relief funds provided by the United States Government through the CARES Act. Unfortunately, this will not be enough.

As of May 14, 2020, we are asking for member contributions of $2.39 per month, or $14.29 per year if paid upfront, to keep Couchsurfing alive. This member contribution is required to access the Couchsurfing website and mobile applications. Your member contributions will be used to support Couchsurfing through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, and to continue keeping this community safe. This is a decision of last resort, and not one taken lightly.

There is good news: All Couchsurfing members can now send unlimited messages and Couch requests. As third-party advertising is no longer supporting Couchsurfing, all third-party advertising will soon be removed from the website and mobile applications. Member contributions will allow us to significantly reduce the cost of Verification in the near future. The Couchsurfing website and mobile applications will continue to evolve and we are in the process of developing many of the exciting features requested by the community.

RE:Couchsurfing is out on money. Will go out of business soon if we do not help

I m very dissapointed in the way they try to get money. Never saw that in the 12 years i m an active member.
Thousand of members can t login anymore .... so suddenly. They first have to pay. This is so respectless
I payed a while ago and i m still ok till 2021. But i ll never pay one more cent as long there is no tranparency.
Who earns money here? How much they earn? If everyone will pay what the ask...They will get millions of dollars every year.

What did they do with all the money they already received? Any idea?

Be Welcome is working with 10.000euro/year and they re very transparent in what they do.

And what CS is doing now is illegal in Europe. Everyone has the right to get into his profile. It is scandalous. I m so dissapointed....

I will admit I am rather frustrated I can not access my profile. I should at the very least have the option to delete it but I can not unless I pay. Some very good points you made so I will hold off on paying the fee until we get more information. For now, the site is locked to non paying members.

I agree with you, I was a very active member of Couchsurfing, hosting in New York very often. But now I can't even access my profile !?!??! I think they should have just made it temporary there is a charge if you want to request accommodation, then you must pay that month. But to totally restrict it is terrible. I will rely on TrueNudists instead. LOL so if you are ever in NYC and need a place, all are welcome!

I don't believe this at all - I think CS is taking advantage of the Covid pandemic and is using that as an excuse to earn more money. I believe it's a complete exploit and is in poor taste.

I'll be couch sharing at my home again starting in August - provided the virus is declining

Now they are getting out of hand. You can not suspend or delete your account without paying for 1 month. So I sent them an email via the contact us and asked them to delete my account I was not paying to delete a voluntary account. Very disappointing in Couchsurfing!
