A reminiscence
Shortly before my ex-wife and I split up after 32 years of marriage, she mentioned that when our elder son was born, her mother had asked her if we were going to have him circumcised, in case he wanted to practise the Jewish religion. My wife explained that because Jewish identity is passed through mothers, our son could not be considered Jewish, because it was her own father who was Jewish, not her mother. When I commented that I did not know why my parents had had me circumcised, my wife was amazed. "You're not circumcised, are you?" she asked. I replied, "We have been married for over 30 years and have been on naturist holidays together: have you never noticed?". She was a nurse and therefore must have seen male genitalia. Presumably, she had averted her eyes whenever I was naked in her company.
