Has anyone tried Japanese whiskeys?
I've tried a few. Some taste close to Scotch, others not so much in my tastes. If you have a chance, try it. Flaviar is an online whisky club that you can order sample sets of various alcohol. Not sure if you have to join as a member. I joined...seems pricey but it about evens out with perks by the time the membership expires.
I have a bottle of Suntory Toki that I got just to try it. It's good, lighter than a Bourbon. I've had it for some time so it must have gotten my attention too much. Maybe I need to revisit it.
It is Bomb! great sipping.
I gave the Suntory Toki another try tonight and it was okay--light and what I would describe as "monochromatic". Not a lot of complexity in the flavor, being pretty uniform from start to finish without a lot of evolution along the way. Dilution from ice melt didn't do much to reveal more aromatics. I don't have a lot of experience with whisky, so can't really comment on how it compares with other styles. I'd love to hear how others describe this particular one (or similar).
I haven't tried any yet, but thanks to all who posted their opinions. Sounds like it would be worth trying. I have noticed Indian malt whiskies at Costco, but haven't given any of those a try.
I had some Chinese distilled spirit (corn liquor, I think). Don't know the brand. More like Chinese white lightning! Will kill what ails you.
The Hakushu , Hibiki and Yamasaki are all excellent. They are incredibly smooth, complex, tend to the sweets and are really well rounded.
As a rule the Japanese whiskies avoid peat so if you dont like that smoky taste (I like it a lot) then theyre a great place to start.
