RE:Finally there is a Naturist Symbol !

If no one paid for it then no one owns it then no one can control its use.

I could print it on 50 t-shirts then sell them to a shop.

The shop will sell them on, a naturist might recognise the design and buy one with the view that it would identify them as a kindred spirit to other naturist. The symbol would have done its intended job.

Unfortunately the other 49 shirts were bought by people just looking for a t-shirt making the symbol meaningless.

Um, the website owned by the creator of the symbol is quite clear about its use. From the web site:

The symbol below has been released for all to use to represent their affiliation with Naturism. I maintain rights as the creator of the symbol. However, you are free to use it in any way you please. If you choose to make a new version of it, you will need to indicate that you have created a derivative of my work. By creating a new derivative, you are also agreeing to allow others to derive new work from your version, and so on.You do not need to cite credit to me to simply use it online in your social media profiles, websites, etc. You do not need to ask for permission to create a t-shirt or a hat or other items, even if you will be selling those items to others. You can super-impose the symbol on your photos. You can combine it with the logo for your club or business. But if there is any question as to where the symbol originated, that is with me.Team Naturist Logo by Jacob Braun is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0

So the creator retains the rights to his creation, but allows others to use it without charge. It's similar to the "copyleft" concept in published works, where the creator sets no limits on distribution, but prohibits others from claiming the work as their own and copyrighting it.

I did not know that Woodsman, thank you. I was just reacting to the previous posts.

You are right. Everybody is free to make t-shirts and other stuff with this symbol. It's 2020. It's the time of open source.

Look at the bright side. Those 49 people might meet a naturist and have a conversation about naturism. Some of them might even try naturism. Wouldn't that be great, just from a conversation about a t-shirt?

Some more examples of how the Naturist Symbol is used in daily (textile) life

I don't dislike the symbol being promoted but I do take exception to the idea that nothing existed prior to this. I would argue that the INF (International Naturist Federation) symbol is fairly well-known (or should be) and many other countries have a national organization that already has a naturist logo unique to that country. Everyone knows what FKK is and within each country the national symbol should be recognizable and if it's not, I would ask why haven't you joined your national organziation? These are the groups that fight for YOUR rights as naturists ... the legalization of beaches, lobbying government, supporting legal challenges and creating a sense of community. Get involved, be vocal, step out from behind your keyboard and enter the world of real-life, social nudism.

If this is all pretty new to you and you don't know how to find your national organization, check out the International Naturist Federation website for a listing of clubs. Neither of the American organizations are members but you will find contact information for at least 50 other countries:

RE:Finally there is a Naturist Symbol !

Somebody explained that on another thread some time back. AANR is for what you could call the "nudist industry" ... the resorts, landed clubs, and the services that cater to nudism. Their interest is in protecting these agencies. The Naturist Foundation, on the other hand, is more oriented to the non-landed clubs and individuals who practice nudism outside the "industry" and are focused on protecting the rights of nudists. Since the two have different goals, it doesn't seem likely that there will be a merger anytime soon.

As for the symbol for the International Naturist Federation, I suspect that they reserve the use of it only to their members, whereas the public-domain symbol has no such limitations. And there is no individual membership in that group, only organizations. The AANR used to be a member, but withdrew, so there is no US group represented in the Federation. The story is here:

It sounds like you might be confusing AANR with the Naturist Society. Both are national umbrella organizations within the United States but neither belong to the international group that most counties have chosen to affiliate with. Beyond that Im not sure of their reasoning. Maybe they feel their efforts are best focussed inward?

Yes, I meant the Naturist Society, not the Naturist Foundation. (I was working with other foundations and the word just popped out). It's the AANR that's focused more on the industry, and TNS on the legal rights of non-affiliated naturists. And I don't know why AANR pulled out of the international organization.

I tracked down the post that explained it. It was by New2NoAZ, who was a public speaker and "new member ambassador" for AANR for some years.

I also think it's important to understand that the AANR is not about promoting nudism...it's about promoting nudist clubs and that a big difference. They are more focused on making nudist clubs more attractive and profitable, and not as focused on fighting for things such as nude beaches and other nudist venues/activities outside of clubs. In that sense, the Naturist Society is more geared to promoting and protecting the rights of nudists and nude activities in general.
