How do you decide what to read next?

How do you go about picking your next book to read? Do you always know which one is next? I always have to have a book going. So when I am done with one, I need another one to pick up. Sometimes that is the middle of the night, and I know I will only fall asleep if I am reading. So I grab another one and start in. There are about 10ft of shelf space beside my bed with the " to be read" books on them loosely arranged by genre.
Sometimes I know a recent purchase will be the next, sometimes I poke thru the shelves for 10 minutes trying to pick one.
What method do you use?

On a related note, by listening to public radio and reading the local paper and a weekly news magazine ( The WeeK) I hear or read book reviews of new books. Once in a great while I am exposed to one that will i buy new, in store or online because it sounds like a must read.. But most of the i time can waituntil i find it used. I do need to do a better job of keeping track of those books that sound like a good read. A paper list in my wallet or maybe figure out how to put a list on my phone.

So share your how you read thoughts please, We might learn something from each other.

RE:How do you decide what to read next?

Since I have downsized my belongings, the next book is most likely to come from the library (although I do own some that I have not yet read). So the way I decide is to browse around the library shelves and see which ones speak to me. I usually check out three per visit, knowing that is a number I can likely finish without using up my renewals.
