US Army ordered nudity in WW2

I am reading a book called Lost in Shangdi-la by Mitchell Zuckoff. Near the end of WW2 a plane with 9 Wacs and 13 male Army guys crashed into a mountainside in a very remote valley in Papua New Guinea. Only 3 on board , 2 men and 1 woman survived. To rescue them the Army Air parachuted in a team of 13 men. One 6'4" white American and the rest Filipino American males ( mostly far shorter than their leader) The area they landed in
had 1000s of native people who had never encountered the rest of the world. The natives wore only penis gourds for the men, and simple flaps of fabric tied around the waist of the women. When the westerners arrived there was at first fear, then curiosity . The male natives came up to the army guys and kept touching and hugging them. it got to the point of being annoying and creepy. So the Commander Walter at first stripped himself and then ordered his men to strip completely to show the natives that they were men. The troop stayed that way for hours and the natives left them alone. Further follow up years later it was found that the natives were simply fascinated by the removable second skin , khaki clothing, that they had first perceived as dried mud that they themselves would use. They knew westerners were male. They were shocked that full out nudity of the western guys. The natives never appeared in public without their penis gourds. Those were only removed in private to pee, or to have sex with the wife. They even slept with the gourds on. So one man's modesty is another man's bareness.

On a side note , has anyone here ever worn a penis gourd? I have a perfect dried gourd to make one and want to use it as a Halloween costume sometime. I know cultural appropriation but I honestly don't care.

Sounds like fun. Hopefully the result is not uncomfortable, especially for your first try at making one. Appropriation is inherent in the human condition. If you get any complaints, ask to be introduced to the one who is being appropriated from! A lot of complaints in this area seem to be on behalf of others rather than the ones directly impacted, while the latter couldn't care less.
