Where were you in *72?
Am sitting here on the back porch (see my media) listening to the radio and enjoying the great weather. Just got through with a few hours of chores, having a cold beer & watching clouds. The DJ just introduced The Doobie Brothers song *Listen to the Music* and noted it came out in the summer of 1972. It made me remember working at the motorcycle shop that year and racing every chance I got. The Hodaka Super Rat 100 I rode was not competitive but taught me that technique and perseverance could get me on the podium anyway. That year & those that followed allowed me to learn. often the hard way . about the trials & tribulations of life. Anyone else care to comment about *72 or their formative years?
I was living with my parents and still at school, not very far from a very, very famous collection of big stones in Wiltshire, England. I remember this song from that time but can't say that it was on my 'playlist' of the time. The Doobie Brothers were fairly well known here, rarely heard on daytime radio playlists though. I'd loosely bracket them in a category here alongside bands like the Allman Brothers, seemingly much more popular in the USA than in the UK, then and now. Here I hear people mention lots of bands and musicians from that period but it is yonks since I've heard the Doobie Brothers mentioned or played. I was never a musician but I've had connections with the music industry over the years and have often come across very different attitudes to, and success of, certain genres and acts on different sides of the Atlantic. Its not just there that there seems to be variances in taste, across Europe tastes can vary considerably, as it can within the English speaking/singing world. I've met Australians who rave about acts I've never heard of and I've spent a good amount of time in that country and with Australians here.
I was really into music in 1972, exploring just about any genre I came across, beyond 'pop' music. I'm still exploring today, part of my long-running refusal to stand still and be cast in and of a certain era! Those years were very formative of my musical preferences although I don't listen to that much from those days on a regular basis, although I enjoy a nostalgic listen.
Freshman in high school. I had just started driving my first form of transport, a Honda CB 175 motorcycle. I was not very active in school activities so spent most of my time with several other friends on bikes. My dad was an auto mechanic so you guessed it, my house was the resident bike shop for repairs, modifications, painting etc.
Music I remember was Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) Gallery Nice to Be With You / Ginger Haired Man . Lobo I'd Love You to Want Me / Am I True to Myself
Amazingly enough the high school has not changed hardly at all as I saw it regularly during our five kids attendance there. I even remember meeting several of my teachers while attending open house with our children who asked, what are you doing here?
I was in the Navy and off the coast of Vietnam for most of '72. Listened to the Doobies but a lot of Santana. I was only able to get some sleep with my headphones on to drown out the 5" guns going off directly over our berthing compartment. ;DDD
Missed quite a bit of home life in '72. Saw some parts of the world I'll never see again. It was a year of many experiences.
End of Junior and start of Senior year of undergrad and a summer night shift factory job to pay for school. My friends and I still joke about that job where the machines broke down often and we stood around while they called in the machinist. That year I was getting used to spending naked time with a buddy in the sauna after a game of handball or other gym time. It took a few more years before I was sunning nude on the roof of my apartment building and venturing out to nude beaches.
Probably playing with trucks in the dirt in the back yard. 'Listen to the Music' gets a regular run on classic hits stations in Melbourne, but I cannot recall any other songs by the Doobie Brothers off the top of my head.
My favorite is Minute by Minute but also like taking it to the streets, what a fool believes and others.
