Skinny Dipping
My first skinny dipping experience occurred when I was around 12 or 13. Started puberty at 11 and was well on my way towards man-sized equipment by the time of that skinny dipping experience.
A friend had a friend who was watching his neighbor's pool while the neighbors were off on vacation. There were four of five of us there to skinny dip in the pool.
I popped a boner before I could get my clothing off. I found that very embarrassing. Today, it would be a cause of pride. But it was such a non-issue for the other guys. One of them, who noticed my embarrassment said, "Just jerk off and it'll go away." I decided to just ignore it and have fun playing in and around the pool. I don't recall whether the boner went away or not, but (much more importantly) I quit caring about it and just had fun.

Next skinning dipping would have been at Yosemite -- Emerald Pool above one of the falls on the way to Half Dome. After that would have been in the Merced River that runs right through Yosemite. My wife and I and another couple went to Yosemite a few times before we had children. The other guy and I would don shorts, get out into the water, swim to the bottom and grab a rock, pull shorts off, put rock in shorts, and carefully place shorts with rock on bottom of river. Wives enjoying seeing their husbands swimming nude.
There was a golf course near where we lived. I would walk to it at night and skinny dip in the ponds. Took a cousin with me a few times.
Eventually visited a clothing-optional beach.
Eventually joined a men's athletic club in which the pool, sauna, steam bath, and hot tub were all clothing-optional.

In the process of getting a skinning-dipping event going (men only), at the Elks Club in Springfield MO.
If you're interested, let me know.

A close friend of mine had a secluded pool in his backyard and some of his friends including me would skinny dip with him when his parents weren't home. Later, when he was in his 20s, he asked his parents why they didn't swim often. His father told him that they did most of their swimming when he wasn't home and they didn't need to wear swim suits.
Was the exercise area clothing-optional also. It was at some men's only facilities.
I think it was originally. Was the exercise area clothing-optional also. It was at some men's only facilities.
When I joined, they made it very clear that the exercise area was NOT clothing-optional. I didn't think anything about it at the time. Some time later I realized that the whole facility was originally very likely clothing-option. And that would explain their reason for over stressing that the exercise area was not clothing-optional.

You probably joined just a little too late.
It was the very early eighties. You probably joined just a little too late. And yes, I think I just missed it. Seemed like it was something that had just changed.
While I heard of places that allowed men to work out nude in the 70s, the only two times I observed it were in the 80s. There was a men only gym near where I lived. I visited it to see if I wanted to join. Nudity was common everywhere in the facility. However it was primarily a bodybuilders gym, which wasn't what I was looking for, so I didn't join. The other was on a business trip and the hotel health center also had local members. Everything except the pool was separate for men and women and there were a significant number of men working out and lounging nude. However suits were required for swimming because the pool was coed. Seems odd to have to be clothed to swim but nude otherwise.
And the women were also probably nude in their separate facilities.Seems odd to have to be clothed to swim but nude otherwise.
I would wonder about that. There is plenty of discussion of men being nude same sex athletic facilities in the past, but I have not seen similar discussions about women. I will start a thread and see what happens.

I was talking with a woman at the pool at the gym a few years ago and was commenting about a younger guy who was doing the towel dance. As I walked by, his towel slipped and he exposed his full-on rock-hard boner. I said, "Now I understand why they do the towel dance. But the thing is, none of men would think anything about it." She said, "Oh, that's interesting -- all of the women are nude in the locker room." I've never been in the women's locker room to verify that. I'll take her word for it.

My wife, who really doesn't like to see anyone except me nude, male or female, has complained about the nudity in the women's locker room,
