Because of my weight, I'm way too self-conscious to just wear shorts when I shirt is not required. But if nudity is permitted, I'm not even slightly or vaguely self-conscious about being totally nude.
I think the reason for that is the textile world is so very concerned about appearance -- that's where I'd be if I had to wear shorts. But the nudist/naturist world is not concerned at all.
I do agree nudist are less likely to worry about appearance .
Indeed. There seems to be a fair bit of thought in the textile world about what swimsuits are 'suitable' based on body weight and age. I've always tended to try and avoid that particular pile-on, but since partaking in public nudity (through CO beaches) and appreciating the ease in which we can comfortably coexist despite our differences and imperfections, I'm now totally against judgement about what others should or shouldn't wear in such circumstances.

I also wear relatively brief swimwear when I can't be nude, despite my weight and age.
I do get some good natured teasing from neighbors and band colleagues about what I am not wearing.
Things like "It must not be that warm today, you are wearing a shirt".
One band colleague, when seeing me take off my shirt and shoes when I got to the car, commented "Sometimes I think that you really want to take everything off and be nude for the rest of your life." I changed the subject.
