Naked and afraid
I have never watched the tv show Naked and Afraid. And I never will. All this show does is exploit and therefore cheapen nudity. First, they are naked but the parts of the body, the genitals and women's breasts, are blurred so in effect they are just in another survivor show with electronic bikinis. Why be "naked " if we Americans can't see them truly naked. Why, to interest those with prurient curiosity? It is probably easy to get caught up in the scenarios within the show. But think of the beginning where they strip also not fully seen. God forbid if some kids might be watching and actually learn what the human body looks like.
Old post but here's my thoughts. I have enjoyed the show. I appreciate that while being nude may be uncomfortable for some in the beginning, they work past it. The show does a good job of showing nudity in a non-sexual environment which is almost unheard of in any media broadcast. It is the censors or the network that create the problem. Shows like Westworld on HBO can show everything but that is a pay channel. I don't know the "ins and outs" of of broadcasting but we as a country need to get over the objection to simple nudity. That's going to take some time and another topic.
I'm pretty much done with survival shows--too many for too long. However, I did appreciate Naked and Afraid. Being a nudist, the nudity in itself was no reason to watch, but I did like the extra challenge the lack of clothing added for people not necessarily used to being without. The ones who were accustomed to being naked were the ones I always pulled for. The people who drove me crazy were the ones who spent time and energy making clothes. Regarding the value of the show--it's entertainment, and if it gets a few people thinking about getting naked outside, all the better. I wonder how many people have tried being naked outside in nature because of the show and how many people have gotten hooked on being naked in nature. One other thing. I'm fine with them fuzzing out genitals. I think people focus on the nudist aspect more that way, as opposed to watching for sexual curiosity. Boobs is another story. No way they should be fuzzed out. Our society needs to get over that already. There are at least ten states now where a woman has the same right to bear her breasts as a man.
