Just a few questions

Sitting here talking to my grandson, we want to know how is aquarius an air sign and not a water sign?? Why is phonetically not spelt fonetically as it means spelt how it sounds??? And who invented pyjamas, why do you need clothes in bed?? All good questions..

Kids ask great questions. When you google those topics with them, it creates a love of learning and an inquisitive and logical mind that can reason that it's logical to figure a bed has enough clothes to spare for the sleeper/s too.

Many words in English come from other languages or evolve through other languages that had their beginning in Greek or Latin just to name two. Dozens of words begin with phon which is Greek for sound. We even have words with the ph making an f sound at the beginning and end such as phonograph.
It was Noah Webster who put out the first dictionary with the purpose of standardizing spelling. He could haved done a better job of making many words spelling conform to their sound. It would have been tough. Your word , spelt, in my part of the country is pronounced spelled.
Language and spelling are constantly evloving and perhaps one day foneticly will be in the dictionary.
