It looks like Werrong beach is done as well now. Went to go there the other day and the track is closed with rangers stopping any access, as the track is being "assessed" for "safety". The ranger I spoke with said it may never open back up because of the so called "risks" to walkers. A sad day.
Yes Werrong is currently officially closed as there is a part of the hill on the trail to access it that has collapsed in 2022 heavy rain and another portion about 150m long and between 20 to 80 m has dropped by 15 cm to 50+cm in some area. With water eroding tgat unstable portion furter it is unlikely the old trail to Werrong will be open anytime soon.
Having said so there is the possibility to create a new trail ( about 250/ 300m up ) diverting from the old one.
It wpuld be better for the authority managing the park to actually create this new trail themselves before people tale it on their hands to do so as to avoud damage to the eco-system.
People want access to Werrong, some have ignored the "closed"signs, and even installed topes to clim up/ down the unstable paortion of the hill! Dangerous action, specially as and wet weather even or as recently experienced, small earthquake, could allow that portion of tge hill to collapse...potentially burring anyone there under tones of rubbles.
Went to Werrong...well wanted to but the sign to the beach have been removed and two barriers are supposed to stop people going there...the fact is tgat the whole side of the park where the beach trail is located is unstable...since 2022 heavy rain 2 more landslides have occured at the beach...but one huge one occured just at the begining of the trail...that one is about 40 time bigger than the one at the beach! ...near the beach a whole part of the national park has moved down by 15cm to 40 cm at places indicating and unstable ground. I lived going down to Werrong neach, but after assessing the risk, it is not worth it...rain is not the only issue now...i m no expert but strong wind may also trigger the collapse of the instable area...not something you want to be walking on when ot gives way! It is not IF but WHEN it will all collapse! It will then likely expose the remaining hillside to further collapse...so indeed Werrong beach is lost!
The question is are we going to take it and say nothing or are we going yo lobby the council to found another location for a clothing optional beach?
You need you lobby the council to actually have a clothing optional beach. Werrong is in the RNP, so to me it never counted as a council beach. Yes, the track has never been great, and the rains certainly would not have helped. With so many beaches in Wollongong, they can afford a couple.
@Jorgerine - What would be the best beach in Wollongong to be proclaimed clothing optional? any suggestions? once we identify a proper site, we can the start an online petition then when we have enough signature we can liaise with the council...
