Spring in Arizona
The weather has made a change for the better here in Arizona. Time for some nude geocaching. I made it out to GC6FTPQ yesterday. This is located at the north end of the Picacho Mountains south of Florence. I've been geocaching and hiking in this area before. I've been planning to try this cache for quite a while. It was a bit of a hike and climb but well worth it. There's been a fair amount of rain this winter so the desert is really green now. The wildflowers are just starting to come out, in a couple of weeks it should be spectacular.
Good for you! I just about headed out that way yesterday myself. Looks like no defined trails in your photo, so I have a couple of questions. Was the photo at or near the geocache? How much off-trail hiking did you do, and did you have any trouble avoiding the cacti?
Pretty much all of my hiking is off trail. That area is like most of the Sonoran desert, lots of vegetation but spread out enough to seldom be a problem hiking cross country. . There area just north of N. Start Road seemed to have more Cholla Cactus, not a problem to walk around but I did pick up some in my shoes that I had to pull out. I carry a Leatherman type tool with pliers just for that task but didn't need need to take them out that day. I just knocked them off my shoes with my trekking pole. There are lots of Arroyos out there but only a few that were so deep that I had to search for a spot I could cross easily. The cache location is on the peak right above my head in the photo. That was around halfway between the road and the base of the hill.
Off trail definitely cuts down on the likelihood of being seen by textiles, so great that way as long as the catclaw trees and cholla aren't too thick. Nice to know that area isn't too bad that way. Pliers of some kind are damn near essential though. Thanks for the great info!
