I go from a swim suit 4" to swim brief, thong or nothing at all. It all depends on the situation and location. When traveling i only take a briefs or thongs. They are easier to travel with since they take less space and dry quicker than a swim suit or swim brief - lined or not, When going to public locations near home it is usually a suit - may run into those that are gossipy type. At home i swim free. When traveling and staying at a hotel I check the vibe in the pool area - as usually swim 1st thing in the morning or last thing at night - less chance of having kids question why I wear what I wear at the pool - since most parents become very conservative when they have kids in my area. Most mornings i can get away with a very narrow brief since I always ask when the pool opens or if I can get in before it opens to others to do laps undisturbedBoard shorts are not an option. I don't even like a long short when dressing for street wear.
I have 3 swimsuits. In order of how often I wear them: 4" tan through, tan through brief, 4" heavier swimsuit.
My choice would be none of the above but there are limited places that allow it.

Forgot to mention that most of my shorts are in the 5 inch inseam range.
I prefer speedo-style briefs when possible. They dont hold clammy water against a large area when I get out of the pool.
I also like the Cooltan tan-through material. It still blocks a lot of the UV, but it is lightweight and soft. I tried Kinikis tan-through briefs when they were available in some really hot cuts and patterns, but they were also very scratchy.

My experience also, Plus Kiniki micro briefs are so low cut that the top of my crack and bush were exposed, and the full cut briefs covered too much. The Cooltan briefs are just the right amount of coverage, even lighter weight and don't scratch. The Cooltan 4" swim shorts are great when I want something with more coverage.
