Swedish Nude Etiquette
My wife and I are visiting Sweden later this month, staying in a cabin on one of the islands near Stockholm. I would be interested to hear from Swedes whether discrete skinny dipping is acceptable? I imagine there will be some less-frequented beaches on the islands where this is possible. Also, I hope to be able to spend some time naked in our cabin and wondered how acceptable this would be if there are other people nearby?
Tom from London.
Have you been on your trip yet? If you have please let us know how it was!
In my experience people are very tolerant of discreet skinny dipping and sunbathing. We try to make sure that we have made an attempt to be a little out of the way but then if someone happens to pass by close enough to see they typically only smile and move on.
Out in the archipelago it's pretty much expected that you skinny dip! Just watch Ingmar Bergman's Summer with Monica for inspiration :)
Thanks for your message Lycaonpictus. We had a fantastic time in our cabin on a small island. The archipelago is unlike anywhere I've ever been. It seems like a playground for Swedes, with cabins and boats of all shapes and sizes everywhere. We had a fantastic view from our terrace watching sailing and speed boats, jet skis and enormous ferries go past, not to mention beautiful sunsets. Managed to skinny dip every day from our own private beach, although I had to watch out for the passenger ferry as the pier for our island was just round the corner. Even the earth toilet wasn't too bad. Would love to go back again. Tom.
