Protecting Our Privacy: The Growing Concern of Profiling Among Naturists
Fellow naturists, the recent increase in fake profiles across this and many other platforms is more than just a rise in scam activityits possible that we are being profiled. Notably, the preferred communication tools of these fake profiles are WhatsApp and Telegram, which may not be a coincidence.
Over the past few weeks, I have engaged with numerous new profiles, purportedly belonging to "single women," only to be invited to continue the conversation on these two messaging apps. When I suggested moving the conversation to a more secure messenger, I encountered resistance and excuses. This pattern of behaviour raises concerns about the potential targeting of the naturist community, with the aim of gathering information. The extent of this activity is unclear, but the sheer volume of fake profiles suggests that this data is valuable to someone.
Through AI analysis of these interactions and the platforms used, it appears that while you retain ownership of your data on WhatsApp and Telegram, the management of these apps may have the ability to use the information you transmit in various ways. This is something to seriously consider when choosing a platform for communication.
To provide some context, here is an overview of the privacy levels for the mentioned messaging apps:
1. WhatsApp:
- Privacy Level: Moderate
- Encryption: End-to-end encryption by default, meaning that only you and the person you're communicating with can read your messages.
- Data Collection: WhatsApp collects metadata, including who you talk to, the time and duration of conversations, and your location. This metadata can be shared with Meta (Facebook) for advertising and other purposes, though the content of your messages remains private.
2. Telegram:
- Privacy Level: Moderate to Low
- Encryption: End-to-end encryption is available only in "Secret Chats." Regular chats are encrypted but stored on Telegram's servers, meaning Telegram can access the content of these messages.
- Data Collection: Telegram collects metadata and stores message content on its servers (except for Secret Chats). While they claim not to use this data for advertising, the potential for profiling exists due to the lack of default end-to-end encryption.
3. **Signal:
- Privacy Level: High
- Encryption: end-to-end encryption by default for all messages and calls, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can access the content.
- Data Collection: Signal collects minimal metadataonly the phone number you register with and the date you last connected to their servers. Signal does not store message content and does not use your data for profiling or advertising.
4. Zangi:
- Privacy Level: High
- Encryption: End-to-end encryption for all communications, ensuring that only the communicating parties can access the message content.
- Data Collection :Zangi does not store any data on its servers. All data is kept locally on your device, meaning they cannot access your messages or metadata.
For those concerned about privacy, I recommend exploring more secure messaging options, such as Signal or Zangi, which offer stronger protections. There are several other apps available that prioritise user privacy and could be better suited for your needs.
Stay vigilant and protect your privacy.
