I am so fortunate in this regard. I used to workout nude every Sunday morning at the Club Fort Lauderdale. Took a bit of a hiatus for medical reasons, but am getting back at it. Something about working out nude gives me more energy and I get a much better workout in. I like it when I am being watched which happens a lot more than at LA Fitness where I am clothed. I absolutely love it when guys sneak pics of me working out nude although they don't have to sneak. I love being photographed nude and everyone has my permission to do so.
Amazing thing is I have only done a nude workout with 3 guys from this site. Everyone says they want to workout nude, but when it comes to actually doing it, they always have an excuse.
I joined a gym back in the 80s.I have some basic workout equipment in the basement so I work out nude most days.If there were a gym nearby that allowed it, I would certainly join!
As best as I can tell, it was originally clothing-optional throughout. Unfortunately, by the time I joined, only the wet areas (pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam bath) were clothing-optional.
I'm 99% certain that if a men's gym opened up in this area (Springfield MO) that was clothing-optional throughout, that it would be immediately considered to be a gay gym. My only issue with that (if I owned the gym) is that straight men would not join and that would greatly reduce membership. As a member, I could not care less except that a lower membership count would likely cause the gym to struggle financially.
I've have plenty of my own good nude experiences.Over 20 years ago, I had a fitness coach in Savannah who would coach using equipment in his home. He would always want us to be naked. He said when I would see his muscles flex, it would inspire me.He would also say that when my muscles would flex and it was really good, he would know because I would have an erection. The natural male camaraderie and competitiveness were powerful motivators.
But I still get a bit jealous when I read something like this. That would be amazing. Especially glad that your boner was not considered a problem. Clearly, it should not be. Unfortunately, all to often, it is.

Your coach had a valid point that erections are a natural sign of masculine vitality which are the result of increased blood flow. Pumping iron; pumping blood. We need to reclaim the healthy erection and the dynamics of healthy working out, appreciating the impact on the entire body while claiming natural male camaraderie an competitiveness as a powerful motivator. As men we are created to be toned and erect in our whole body when fully engaged and alive. Let's not shun this to favor a flaccid ideal.
This is not to say that healthy workouts equal healthy erections. When I do core training, especially combined with cold weather, my cock retracts to the point I can ask "Where's Waldo?" Naked workouts honor men as total men regardless of orientation or shape and should be encouraged for our overall wellbeing.

As recently as the 70s there were men's athletic clubs that allowed men to workout while nude.

I am aware of several where it continued into the 80's. Most were ones I heard about rather than actually used.
The only two I actually used were both attached to hotels.
One of them had separate workout areas for men and women and nudity was common in the men's workout and lounge area. However the pool was coed so the one exercise you couldn't do nude was swim.
I also visited a male only gym where I lived that I was considered joining. All of the patrons in the pool were nude, as were most on the sundeck and at least some everywhere. However, it turned out to be an intense weightlifting/bodybuilding facility so I didn't join.
I wish I had the money to set up such a gym.I also visited a male only gym where I lived that I was considered joining. I don't think I'd bill it as being clothing-optional. Rather, I just make sure it was totally private. And outdoor lounge area would also be great -- with tall privacy fence.
I think nudity could be introduced slowly.

Perhaps designate clothing optional times and see who shows up.
Or making shirts optional and try full nudity later.
I would have the entrance and foyer such that you cannot see into the rest of the facility. Have part of the front desk situated such that members could stand I it without being seen from the main foyer area.Perhaps designate clothing optional times and see who shows up. Certainly, shirts would be optional from the beginning.
I think, from there, you could use change agents -- something I leaned in business school. Have the locker room area not be entirely closed from the rest of the gym. Have a few guys, not a lot, who freely move about the locker room area in the nude. Stand around and talk with each other, shave, shower, swim, jacuzzi, sauna, steam bath, scale, urinal, all fully nude.
Visit the private side of the front desk in the nude.
Make a quick trip back into the gym without getting dressed.
The outdoor lounge would be off the pool area, don't bother getting dressed to go sun for a while.
If it were done slowly, I think guys would become accustomed to it and more would join in.
