If you look at the monument, it says Southernmost Point in the Continental United States. Technically, that is not even correct as there is land south of the monument, but that is the Naval Air Station property.

i did a polar plunge into the Southern Ocean 1900 miles from the South Pole . Deception Island is off the coast of the Antarctic Penisula
They made me keep my swimsuit on. The water temp was about 2F and so was the air temp. I was very happy for the fluffy warm towel upon getting back on the ship.

What time of year was that? I know someone who did the Antarctic Marathon on the peninsula in March, the warmest month. He said temperatures were comparable to January in Hartford, where he lived, with highs in the 30s.
