Boobs and eyeballs
Everybody wants your eyeballs. Everybody. Companies, "influencers", mere bloggers... Even, to certain extent, me, when I show myself naked on this site or write this kind of blurb. It is true, I would like a select few eyeballs, my social sites are friends only and I don't accept everyone who wants to join this group (and kick them out if they are inactive) but anyway. Of course, I can't be as selective as that in a nudist place so I'm ok with that too.
But my point is that boobs and eyeballs go together well. Everybody has understood this. There is no European movie which doesn't show at least one, preferably several pairs, some particularly endowed ladies have made lots of money on Onlyfans, some other have become famous by only showing a bit of them... When I did my test as a would-be model I got lots of offers to show them to a camera for cash. Ok, the offer was not only for boobs, it was for showing all of me, but I am confident that I could still get some small change for showing only boobs.
And here comes Femen, the Ukrainian organisation created around two decades ago, and its offsprings. You can make claims online, nobody reads them, you can shout them in the street, nobody cares, but write them on your bare chest and people will pay attention.
The first Femen had very political and well thought-through messages but later on lots of ladies decided to imitate them and sometimes for less relevant topics. It's difficult to draw a line. Bare your boobs to cry out slogans against violence against women sounds fine to me. Showing them to condemn sexual objectification of women sounds less relevant in my mind. I mean by using your boobs to attract eyeballs and hence attention to your message is exactly the kind of objectification you are supposed to combat.
Not that I am entirely against some objectification. I wouldn't like my friends, colleagues and business partners to objectify me all the time. Think that I am just a silly big-boobed blonde doll and address me with Sweetie. But what's the opposite of objectifying? I guess that's personalising. But can I expect all guys who see me to personalise me, especially when I am wearing something sexy or nothing at all? Think "there goes an interesting person, who can sustain a discussion about philosophy, speaks six languages and has a PhD"? Of course not. They will see a sexy woman, they will appreciate what they see and I will take it as a compliment if their appreciation is gentleman-like. I mean I grew these boobs to be sexually attractive to you and then I go all upset if you find them sexy? As said several times, we started to grow these uselessly big lumps of fat around our mammary glands at the time we became bipedal exactly to signal sexual fitness to you. Aka to be attractive. Their general message is "I am fit for spreading your genes". Of course, this is the basic message, not the proxy one. The latter is what you perceive and that is "I am very fuckable". Do you think that a lion mates with a lioness thinking of spreading his genes? Well yes and no. Yes, this is the basic reason, but the proxy one, the one he thinks of, is that sex feels good.
So ladies, you sell boobs for eyeballs. Your boobs become the currency with which you buy attention. There is nothing less personalised than cash. Again, not that I am against some sexual objectification and if it can be put to good use, I'm all for it. But sexually objectifying yourselves to fight against sexual objectification seems kind of schizophrenic to me.
So a couple of weeks ago I saw a big topless manifestation in Paris. About 20 topless women manifesting for an international politics issue. Not going to get into political debates here, so I will not reveal it. But I was discussing the issue with three girlfriends. We all thought that it was a good manifestation which, regardless whether or not you agreed with the message, was very successful. It attracted lots of media attention. Eyeballs.
So we said why don't we do it ourselves. One of us would likely be arrested, but the four of us with some media campaign prior to the event and some nice slogans written on our chests could be quite effective. None of us is shy about showing our boobs in public, in fact, none of us would shy away from showing full nudity in public if this served a good cause. But that would get us arrested too fast, I argued. Maybe start topless and then, when all the media is around and protects us, we drop our bottoms and show some extra slogans on our butts and pubis? The worst that can happen is we get arrested, fingerprinted and pay a couple hundred euros each in fines. And while Femen manifestations have become quite common, our fully nude one would likely become a major event. We do have two common causes we believe in, both linked to news of the day or of the year. One of them is not controversial at all. Let's call it Stop the rapists (nothing to do with the two US citizens sent back from Romania). The other is highly controversial and would likely get us arrested even in full clothing. Let's call it Stop the killers.
Ok, this post is becoming too long so I'll jump to the usual questions. What do you think?
Are these topless manifestations useful? Do you, as guys, get more than an eyeful out of them? Do you care about the message or just the boobs on display?
Do you see the women doing it as strong, fearless fighters who do what it takes to pass their message on or as cheats who use the image of their lady bits to pay for undeserved attention?
Should I and my friends do such a stunt ourselves? If yes, should it be for the safer or the more controversial subject? And should we stick to the traditional toplessness or should we dare to go fully naked?
First ... thank you Flora for giving us another stimulating topic to ponder along with our thoughts on viewing your 'lady bits'. I'm sure our responses will be somewhat varied but since your core group has remained fairly constant will be as in the past. Here's my somewhat 'southern gentleman' thoughts on the matter:
Are these topless manifestations useful? Do you, as guys, get more than an eyeful out of them? Do you care about the message or just the boobs on display?
1. These manifestations are probably somewhat useful. If nothing else, they bring the message to a wide audience. As to an eyeful or more, that would probably depend on the individual's perspective. I would do a quick breast review & then scan the message. Please be creative & clever with the wording. After that point, it would depend on the feelings & case made for the message conveyed.
Do you see the women doing it as strong, fearless fighters who do what it takes to pass their message on or as cheats who use the image of their lady bits to pay for undeserved attention?
2. Again, my thoughts would be on the extent to which, using Flora's term, the message was tastefully conveyed or transmitted. A gross approach is not going to get a second look from me & might make me leave immediately. But then again, I'm an outlier.
Should I and my friends do such a stunt ourselves? If yes, should it be for the safer or the more controversial subject? And should we stick to the traditional toplessness or should we dare to go fully naked?
3. I cannot judge which promotional approach would be best as I am not familiar with the degree of feelings on the subject nor the mores of the local area. If you believe in the cause & don't 'go off the deep end', the event could cause greater knowledge and awareness of the problem or situation and be beneficial overall.
You & your friends are all on the upper side of the 'brains department' and are more than capable of selecting a positive approach. I look forward to an after action report or review to let us know how it went. Good luck.
I personally admire the women who protest in this manner - I do think it takes a lot of courage for a woman to bare themselves in front of so many strangers. Yes, there is a certain voyeuristic aspect to my interest- but I think it can be a effective way to raise peoples awareness of important issues that might get lost otherwise in the constant media barrage we are subjected to. Are the women protesting in this manner mostly putting on a show? Or would one be able to approach them to engage in discussion of the issues? I think if you were to stage such a protest, perhaps Environmental issues might be appropriate. In that context, full nudity- with the connotations of fall from the Garden of Eden - would seem apt. Some accessories- like clipboards for the signing of petitions- might be useful and engage more interest.
Sex, or rather sexiness sells, whether you're selling for cash or selling for eyeball and media time, baring your breasts in public will create interest and attention, then your slogans sells the message that you intend to impart. Is a simply well used strategy.
Well a part naked woman will get some attention but then if you go further, it will get lots, or it would here in Australia, you probably just need to tip of the media first. The topic probably needs to be current and maybe controversial. The WNBR is always about using less oil etc. it's important and consistent but not new. If you want good publicity, a number of naked women, part or full will get some but a good topic on top may get a lot more. So what is the topic / cause / protest?
