This is true but if you shoot in RAW, whilst it gives you the widest palette of 'raw material', you are therefore forced to use some post production techniques. I think you have got to decide what technique suits the result you want to achieve. I am not one to change backgrounds, although I have 'tidied up' a background now and then, but I do work on the image to give me the finished picture I have in my mind, particularly by adjusting contrast and colours. By the way, my own starting point in post production is to sharpen up the image slightly. Even if you want to achieve a 'soft focus' effect finally it is still a good idea, in my view, to start off with a nice clean image (but don't over-sharpen it!). The beauty of modern digital photography is that you can achieve what you used to be able to achieve, and more, in a top-end darkroom without the need to invest in making the room lightproof!
