New Flower Bed

I'm creating a new flower bed beside the new guesthouse we installed a couple of weeks ago. I'll be planting Holland flower bulbs this fall. The bed will be mostly in the sun. Trying to decide what I want in that bed that's compact and content the rest of the summer, fall, and spring. I do not want to plant roses. We're in climate area 8 I believe (Midlands of South Carolina).
Any suggestions/recommendations?

To those who might be interested:
I planted a medium purple butterfly bush, 2 portulocca (volunteers), small compact holly w/o thorns (volunteer), lantana (volunteer). This November, I'll be putting in some blue spectacle tulips (they look more like dahlias), salome & palmares daffodils. I have also put in a couple of stepping stones (look like flip flops).

Although I'm mostly a vegetable gardener, the butterfly bush we planted last year has been amazing!
