Hi ... Sounds very cool .... I'm in N.W. Illinois but haven't found a place to go hiking.

Depending on where you are in Illinois, you may not be to far away from places in northeast Iowa.

NE Iowa would be about two hours for me, tho during the week i sometimes have to be near, maybe an hour away. It would be nice to steal away an afternoon if possible.

will be planning a group hike in brush creek canyou nature preserve just north of arlington, Iowa depending on the weather maybe june but August for sure. This summer 2011

In an attempt to get this group going again.....A place I have found, though don't get to very often due to distance, is Johnson Shutins. If you take the Blue trail down river from the shutins, and then continue along the river where the trail turns away from the river, you are likely to be by yourself all day, even on weekends. In all the times I've gone there, once I got past where the trail turns (A good swimming spot by the way), I haveonly seen another person once (That was on a weekend, when I usually don't go). There are several good spots to sun and/or swim. There may only be a few good days left this season, but I will be back next summer.

Well, I did make it back last Friday, and I may go again tomorrow. I had to cut my Friday trip short to make it back for a visitation (I'm to young to be going to friends funerals already :( ). It's a nice hike, the water is clean, the sun is warm. What more could you ask for?
