If Nudism Were Legal Everywhere

Recently, on a nudist web site, the question behind a post was, Should it be legal to be naked anywhere? This is a nudism topic I have seen many times, but usually as somebody stating they would be nude all the time if it were legal.
An interesting idea; one that has crossed my mind many times. As a nudist for over 20 years, I have asked myself where I would go nude if it were legal everywhere (notwithstanding climate and temperature). Would I go food shopping or to restaurants? What about taking my car into being serviced? How about jury duty? (The one thing many would do nude is take a commercial flight; much easier to get through airport screening.)
Here are my thoughts. How comfortable would I be as the only nude person in those situations? Unfortunately, a lot would depend on what other people were doing. Even being a confirmed nudist, there are limits to how I would react to these opportunities to be nude in public. But that is not only me. In New York State, women are legally allowed to be topless anywhere men can be topless. Yet, few women take advantage of that freedom, most likely due to social pressures to conform.
Finally, if legal, I would enjoy having the freedom to be nude around my own property; taking my dogs outside, getting the paper in the morning, washing my car, doing yard work, etc. Since I would be on my own property, I would feel comfortable nude there, regardless of how many other neighbors were nude outside their houses.
I have some experience being an early adapter in nudist situations, so I can see where being the first in the neighborhood to be nude outside would make others feel comfortable to do the same. There are many home nudists, and having somebody break the ice would be all it takes. Some folks are shy and just need a little positive role model and support. I can do that!

RE: If Nudism Were Legal Everywhere

The key to this post is acceptance. You mentioned NY laws. Yes it is legal but not yet socially acceptable. Yes you do need people to lead and be role models. It has to be enjoyed as their life style and not done in protest. If it were legal everywhere I feel I'm the type of person who would definitely be nude doing yard work, both front and back, at my home.

I think it depends on the "where and how." I live in the city - as in right in the middle of a city. I am not going to walk nude outside my appartment and down the street - crossing paths with 60 to 100 dressed people (potentially co-workers too) to pick up groceries. Some more "daredevilish" nudists might go for it...and I say more power to them; but not me.

  1. However. What I would do is make my actual nudist activities more "encompassing". I would, for example, disrobe in the car and drive nude out to Mazo beach; and when I got there, I would walk to the beach and back also nude. Back when I lived in a house and drove to the resort, I used to think it would have been nice to just drive back nude, park directly in the garage and just stay nude the whole time.
I think it would be easier to "set the standard" for those living in the suburbs or beyond, simply due to a significant reduction in "responses" to one's nudity. For example, when I lived in my suburbantownhouse with a fenced backyard, with legalized nudity I would have just forewarned (nicely) the one neighbor that could see into my yard from his window. And then I would have been nude in my entire backyard rather than just a small section on the patio. I also had a nudist friend who lived in a semi-rural neigborhood. With legalized nudity I would have just driven nude to his house, pulled up in his driveway and walked to his front door nude; instead of waiting to be inside the house and guided to the guest room to disrobe.
  • This is not quite as noticeable as walking down the street of an urban area nude; but you get enough people just picking up the mail nude, or driving nude; or pulling up in a driveaway and walking to the front door nude...and other people start picking up on it and trying it.

This is so interesting. The people belonging to a nudist web site would still be rather conservative in their nudist activities even if it were legal! Who'd a thunk it!?

I think for most of us ... nudity in public would be a "gradual" thing. If tomorrow, there was acceptance of nudity "everywhere", I still feel we'd be cautious. Things like going out to get the paper, getting the mail, moving our cars around, washing our cars, doing some yard work ... those are things that I know, I'd start out with. I'd gradually advance to getting fuel in our cars, going to the bank and use the ATM and most likely, take my naked driving a bit further and drive with the windows down and drive my classic muscle car that sits very low and doesn't have tinted windows. As time passed, I'd take the public nudity further but certainly not right off the bat. ;D

I guess I didn't make myself clear! :D I too do much of what "alwaysnude" does nude. When I stated doing yardwork ... I/we do all our backyard maintanence in the nude but if it became "legal" to be nude in public, I'd do the front yard in the nude as well. I also go out to my truck or cars in the front yard nude but only late at night and being cautious as "always". I've gotten fuel in the nude, drive nude ... load and unload our cars and truck nude ... when I'm certain I won't be seen by neighbors ... but if it were legal ... I wouldn't worry about them seeing me. NOW ... the movies ... I would love to be able to go to the movies nude and watch a movie. Being naked at the movies would be great for two reasons ... 1) love being naked and prefer being naked ... and 2) a lot easier to wipe off the butter from the popcorn, off your skin then getting it outta your clothes! LOL :D

alwaysnaked1071: For example, if you go into a store these days, they will tell you, no shirt, no shoes, no dice (couldn't resist a Fast Times at Ridgemont High reference). At least they don't require that you wear pants. lol
