Has anyone watched the Starz series Spartacus?
I am currently watching the first season of Spartacus and I am so impressed with the amount of nudity and the way it is handled! There is partial nudity, complete male and female frontal nudity and whole body nude scenes in every episode. The series is telling a very violent story and the violence is extreme and severe, more like video-game violence or graphic novel stuff than a traditional film treatment. Much of the nudity has a sexual undercurrent, but I am very happy to see that much of it is not sexual in theme. Much of the nudity centers on the free openess of the culture and there are many scenes of men and women taking public and private baths with the assistance of slaves. The viewer gets to watch and appreciate the human body in the way people celebrated it in ancient Rome. Much of the direction is designed to titillate, but I am as interested in the nude wrestling and men just sitting around totally naked talking. There was no such open nudity in the motion picture versions of Spartacus or Gladiator. You have to enjoy the gladiator violence and bloodiness of the arena to stomach the series. But the nudity is very pleasurable.
I watched the series Rome a few years ago and it had quite a bit of nudity. Like the Spartacus series, Rome had a lot of sex scenes and much of the nudity was centered around sex. But Spartacus also uses nudity very naturally in showing the openly nude culture of the men sharing living spaces and the women bathing communally.
yes...i did...very recently...i loved the series...it had a nice story line......season 3's on now
and i loved the nudity...soo beautifully handled......even though it might have been for commercial purposes......
and may i add...i 'loved' the sexually undertoned ones more than the free nude scenes.....(u can get the general idea)..:P
I have enjoyed the Spartacus series as great entertainment. I certainly LOVE the nudity in it and feel that it is probably shown the way it was. I have the DVDs for the series to enjoy over and over. Thank you Staz for a great series.
I watched a couple of episodes and if there is at least one good thing that I can say about it is that its not one of those shows when women see their nakedness being exploited, since men are seen entirely naked as well, but I think that the show tried to hard to shock its viewers, tried so hard to be controversial that sometimes, instead of us being disgusted by all the violence, we actually yawned (speaking of myself, by the way). And also the dialogues were sometimes very ridiculous: we get that that english accents give shows a certain sense of quality, but the fact that gladiators had such thoughtful conversations, with some very intricate vocabular ... well, it sort of called for suspension of disbelief ...
One of the things that really put me off was the constant use of intricate senses such as " have you decided which of the gladiators would you prefer to see nude and have his cock inserted in you, sending shivers down your spine while his powerful hands force you to do this bidding ? " ( know that this isnt the most intricate of the lot ) - by always pointing out the words "cock", "vagina", "fuck", I believe that the show lost some charm, in the sense that as crude as it could be, when you give so much away about what the characters will do, when you see it you go like "seriously ? is that all that is " ? But I guess that we havent changed that much, since theres still a lot of backstabbing and betrayal nowadays as well ... sadly :(
