Objectifying others...
Original question. Do you feel it is okay to objectify another human being? Why or why not?
Title changed 7-19 per DesertRat's suggestion. I also wanted to add the following. I enjoy hearing others views that are productive. Naysayers or instigators of negativity are not welcome.
Do you feel it's beneficial to objectify yourself or others? Why or why not?
I do not feel it is right to objectify anyone. Unfortunately it occurs no matter how hard we try not too. We get angry or feel down or whatever emotion, and feel the need to take it out on something or someone...even ourselves. It doesn't make it right. I try to be mutually respectful, yet I sometimes make light of someone or, because I tend to be sarcastic at times, hurt people without realizing it. I tend to be more respectful while online as I can edit my comments, plus I have more time to think it all out and act right. I am still a good person in real life, but the filter sometimes fails and I speak before thinking it out fully.Any rebuttals?

Of course not. Admire yes, objectify no.
You say of course not but people clearly choose to objectify self and others every day and not only make the choice to do it themselves but encourage others to do so... I saw recently on another social network page, parents encouraging their children to use people. Blah.
Of course we all do objectify others. We have to. If we discuss things about humans, it is too complicated to think about each individual. We have to aggregate humans to be able to describe them. Legislators do this all of the time. Teachers do this when talking about students in general. Then there are the bad reasons. For example to allow us to live with ourselves after we do something mean to another. We can rationalize the meanness if done to an object instead of a person.
People are individuals and not objects. People have feelings, objects do not. To consider a person to be an object is very demeaning. In our society this is done all the time and I feel it tends to break down society, not build it up. Unfortunately it is probably done more to women than to men and this causes women to receive less respect than they should have ordeserve.
One of the worst offenders of this probably is the mass media. They have a habit and vested interest in putting a label on almost everyone. We all can probably remember being told as a child that if you can't say something nice about a person, don't say anything. How many of us can honestly say that we always follow that rule?

Well stated but do we truly have to? Is it my place? Just throwing thoughts out there...

Yes. No one in their right mind can say they are without fault but that doesn't negate responsibility and better choice in the future. Thank you for sharing.
1 Love,
When I first saw your post, I was a little confused about it. Then I realized what you were talking about. It is a very deep, intriguing and insightful question. May I suggest that you go back and change the title to something a little more pertinent to the subject? I don't feel that this post is getting the response it deserves.

Thank you DR. I will as I do enjoy hearing other's perspectives.
