This is the first Mother's Day since the passing of my Mom last June. This is not really a sad day because she lived a long and productive life. I would just like to say a few words in memory of a life well lived.
The most memorable thing about my mother was her ability to bounce back. What ever hardships life dealt her, she always persevered. She never quit. From childhood polio, living through the Great Depression, enduring war time hardships and the loss of loved ones her spirit never broke. Raised in an age where women were not expected to attend school beyond high school, she sought to educate herself. Books were a part of her life. She didn't restrict herself just to novels choosing instead a wide variety of topics. Science, politics, global explorers and adventure, literature and music were some of her favorite topics. Later in life she just read for pure pleasure.She got into mysteries, adventures and some science fiction. About this time she also got into public speaking and mastered all the stages of Toastmasters International. She advanced her studies into Parliamentary Procedure and became a registered Parliamentarian.
I didn't know it growing up but my parents were a part of the Greatest Generation and my mother was one of the greatest members of that generation. My mother left us with a lot of great memories but most of all she provided a great example of how life should be lived.
As I said, she left us last June. She was 104. Bye Mom. We'll always love you.
