If people have to go to a link just to find out what you're talking about, they're not going to bother. If they have to work to find out, they'll just go to the next thing. I've read that that's the first rule of an effective website or Internet campaign: "Don't make me have to think."
I've got far better things to donate money to than a bunch of mats to walk across the beach. Chances are, the Park Service won't allow it. And if someone's in charge of it, it'll last for a month, then someone will lose interest and forget about it, and we'll be out mats and money.
