AANR
I used to be a member, but am not currently. In the past, I was frustrated with their focus on resorts rather than naturism in general, but they seem to be changing that recently. I've been unimpressed with their leadership. They recently had the firing of their executive director under questionable circumstances, and they have a new president who I hear is good, but I haven't seen any radical improvements since she took over.
It's tough. I'm unhappy with the organization, but they are the only game in town (there's TNS, but I don't think they have near the impact and scope as AANR), but if I were to support AANR I'd feel that was condoning their policies which I as an individual member would have very little influence over.
We are members through our non-landed club. We make our membership fee back every year in discounts at area clubs, as well as at Club Orient and on one of our nude cruises. Not happy about what happened to their ED either, but we decided to renew.
I used to belong to AANR. I got tried of what seemed to be mostly a trade association for clubs. Also, I really got sick of their (now gone) Executive Director's picture on virtually every page of their publication. Now I belong to TNS. I feel they are interested in more then just the clubs; just look at all of the articles in N Magazine about travel to other places.
We are members of AANR and I wish that they had a greater voice in the individual's rights to be nude. The problem is that they do not and can not speak for ALL nudists. In reality they are limited by the small percentage of nudists who are actual paying members to AANR. If AANR had more members they could have a greater influence on the way nudists are treated on the State and local levels. No one in local politics has any reason to fear us nor cater to us. To them, we are a non-entity and that is borne out by our measly official membership numbers. AANR can only speak for their actual membership roster, which unfortunately, is not very large.
We belong to AANR. Am i happy with it entirely? No. You can find fault in anything if you look hard enough. But I feel there is strength in numbers. You need organizations to battle what we want. I still hold annual memberships to snowmobile and motorcycle clubs too. But I havnt owned either now for 4 years. But I still believe in the sport and support them. Look back in history and see what an organization such as AANR has accomplished through the years. Then make your decision.
Some people may have misinterpreted what I was saying in my previous post on this subject. We are AANR members and intend to maintain our membership as far into the future as we can foresee. We feel strongly about this organization and it's goals and ideals. Our main complaint is that there are so many nudists who refuse to become a part of the organization. Worse still is that these people complain about the efforts that this organization is making on behalf of getting nudism more widely accepted. Sure not all of their efforts bear fruit but with a larger membership base they can spread the word more widely. No one can accept everything that any organization attempts, but we should all be supportive of it's basic goal. That is to promote nudism. Your membership and more importantly your dues will help promote this organization. Therefore all nudists, and friends of nudists in the United States and Canada should be a part of this organization.
We belong to TNS. AANR can bite it from the way I was treated as a single nudist male by clubs when my ex and I split up, AANR DID nothing and I was a paid member. TNS works closely with the Naturist Action Committee, the legal side of keeping our nude beaches, and naturists in general. AANR threw us under the bus over San Onofre beach. The don't want free places for nudists, they cater to the reservations, excuse me, "resorts" where they make money. AANR does nothing for nudists.
Thats a personal thing you have which may be true for you. AANR has worked with Richard Mason and his wife keeping Haulover Beach going. They helped get a nude beach dedicated in the Port St Lucie florida area. They have supported petitions in Sarasota and Jacksonville area too if I recall for nude beaches. I feel the new staff is trying to turn the organization around to a more positive. But it does take time to weed the bad stuff out.

A rare occasion, but I must agree with the rabbits on this one....
Also it appears AANR is looking out for the local scene on the East coast but
nothing for the West coast.... East is least.... West is best in my books....
Currently both AANR and TNS member. I like AANR though because I feel I am more involved in nudism where TNS makes me feel it is more of an informational source fore exotic nude destinations I could not afford.
AANR also gets you more gate fee discounts I think than TNS does at resorts.
