Hopefully I can set off by road to Sth Aust in mid Jan, and stop for a couple of days at Sunland... it sounds good... do they welcome single guys?

Do it. It's well worth it. Access is easy too. While the road in is dirt, it's vert good quality. I did it in a Prius. :-)

They welcomed three single guys, so the answer is yet. Very friendly. Very community. Calling it a village is most appropriate.
