barriers to being naturist
Return to DiscussionsFor me it was stereotypes and acceptance. I didnt know if places that allowed social nudity was accepting of all cultures. Not only are they, I was greated and treated as if i was a long time member of the club. Although on the day that we went together, we were the only black couple but found out that the club has several black members.
I am writing a blog on stereotypes but I believe that is a big barrier for a lot of us.
No they don't. it is a personal barrier just like other body image issues. People with "Body Builder" bodies are not the normal nudist but that is what some people think. It is not until you go and see all different sizes, shapes and colors that one sees the beauty of nudism.
I find that the biggest barrier - well, I wouldnt say this is a barrier and more of a misconception - is that black folks arent nudist. Outside of the black community Ive had to deal with so many negative stereotypes that allow my body to be sexualized more than others (I hate dick watchers!). Within the community, where Im from, there arent many black people who hold a healthy image of the human form and therefor demonize people who are nudist and their own bodies in the process.
Thanks for commenting. You make some very important points. This is why i think it is necessary to have group that not only support black and brown people in naturism but also decolonize naturism and the notion that black and brown people are not naturists to inspire others to claim their heritage.
IMHO the biggest barrier is MISinformation. (Years ago I would have said just finding information on nudism and locations for participation. But with the internet / social media if you can't find information online you're not trying.)
But along with the availability of real information about what nudism IS there's a lot of DISinformation that isn't really about nudism. Most of it revolves around S-E-X.
Let me pause and say I don't believe the narrative that most "prudists" try to push saying nudism has NOTHING to do with sex. I don't believe that nudists are asexual. We're capable of the same discretion and situation appropriate behavior as our textile counterparts.
That said, there are too many pornographers and those with ulterior motives who try and peddle their behavior as "nudism". And then there are those who really aren't "nudists" that are just misinformed through misrepresentation by the former and believe that any behavior, as long as you're naked, is "nudism" (though I really believe sometimes they know the difference and try to rationalize what they know is wrong).
But all this disinformation results in true nudists who just aren't informed to go running in the opposite direction.
