Barefooters
A group for those of us who enjoy being barefoot as much as possible. For the hardcore barefooters among us, it's a way of life!
Driving barefoot
Return to DiscussionsOut of habit, I always drive barefoot. Not just because I prefer to be barefoot in general, but because it also helps me to feel much more in touch with the pedals and the road. What's surprising is how so many people think the practice is somehow discouraged or even illegal. For those of you in the U.S., rest easy. Driving barefoot is totally legal in all 50 states! And from what I've read, the same holds true in most (if not all) other countries as well.
So who else is a barefoot driver? What do you like, or maybe not like, about driving in bare feet?
I've been driving barefoot for so long that actually trying to drive with shoes makes me feel insecure, so I avoid it. Generally I don't wear socks even when I have to wear shoes for formal occasions. If this happens at all (like when I wear jacket and tie), I need to get rid both of shoes and socks before I start to drive, as it feels slippery and I don't feel as much in control.
As I am barefoot almost all the time, naturally I drive barefoot too, and yeah there's no better feeling. I couldn't drive with shoes on now if I tried...I need to be able to feel the pedals. I also sometimes drive with one foot propped up on the dash (not the safest thing in the world, I know) provided I'm not going super fast or in a position where I need to have a lot of control.

I practice barefooting for 10 years, and even I drive always barefoot. All the year. I argue that driving barefoot, there is the absolute sensibility on the pedals.
I've got a VW bus that I always drive barefoot because the pedal vibration is the only way I can be sure it is still running. Besides, it would be silly to drive a hippie bus anyway other than barefoot. On a related note, driving in flip flops seems dangerous.
Me too, I maintain that it is dangerous to drive in flip flops. Although the Highway Code, for me that I live in Italy, it allows. Even for me, it is much better to drive barefoot, and I do all year.
